Aspiring Hollywood grew out of an idea that developed while I was teaching screenwriting at UCLA Extension. I saw a need for a forum where emerging filmmakers and artists could find practical advice, share their work, and learn from the experiences of established entertainment industry professionals. Today, Aspiring Hollywood explores filmmaking, screenwriting, directing, and the business of Hollywood through interviews, articles, and podcasts featuring established and emerging talent. Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in the independent film business, host Luc Saber shares personal stories, industry insights, and practical guidance on the creative and business sides of bringing projects to life.    Reading the Screenplay Like a Producer

   Can you read a screenplay like a producer? There's a difference between reading a screenplay and understanding what it will take to turn those pages into a finished motion picture. After more than 30 years in the independent film business, I've learned that it's important to approach a screenplay from two perspectives: first, as an audience member experiencing the story, and then as a producer evaluating what it will take to make the film. That second read can reveal production challenges, scheduling considerations, potential budget issues, and opportunities to get creative with the resources available.    Aspiring Filmmaker Series: Selecting the Story

   Sometimes the hardest part of making a film isn't writing the screenplay. It's deciding which story to tell in the first place. In this episode of Aspiring Hollywood, I share a real experience from my years in the independent film business. I had just finished one film when I was given the opportunity to make another—but I had less than four weeks to come up with the story. I had several completed screenplays in my portfolio, but finding the right one meant looking beyond the writing itself. The story had to fit the budget, make sense for the marketplace, and—just as importantly—be something I actually wanted to spend the next year of my life developing, producing, and marketing. I ended up taking a screenplay that began as a supernatural story about a cop and his brother and rebuilding it into something very different. Along the way, I learned some valuable lessons about choosing a story, developing characters, thinking visually, understanding the marketplace, and balancing creative decisions with the business realities of independent filmmaking. If you want to get a film made, I believe it’s also important to understand how production companies, distributors, sales agents, and film buyers may look at a project. In this episode of Aspiring Hollywood, I draw on more than 30 years of experience in the independent film business to discuss how you can approach a screenplay with both the creative and business sides of filmmaking in mind. I explore why story, character, cast, structure, dialogue, and action all matter when you're developing a screenplay that you ultimately want to see become a film.
