Excessive Use of Force Against Youth in Venezuela
On March 5, 2014, while the Venezuelan National Guard was suppressing protests against the government of Nicolás Maduro, they attacked Moisés Guanchez. Although he was not actively participating in the demonstration, Moisés was arbitrarily detained by the guards and suffered injuries due to the excessive and unjustified use of force. Since the day of the attack, National Guard officials undertook a campaign of harassment against Moisés, eventually forcing him to flee the country. On 26 April 2017, in Caracas (Venezuela), a student at the Metropolitan University was hit by a tear gas canister, which ended his life hours later. His killing, which took place in the context of the 2017 protests against the government of Nicolas Maduro, illustrates the widespread violence perpetrated by the government against protesters and bystanders, and the impunity with which these crimes were committed. <br />This is the story of Juan Pablo Pernalete.<br /><br />The original version of this episode is in Spanish, and it was launched on 26 April 2023.
