Danang Sutawijaya nama kecilnya. Ayahnya bernama Ki Ageng Pemanahan yang berjasa besar membantu Jaka Tingkir membunuh Aryo Penangsang, adipati Jipangpanolan dalam krisis politik di Kesultanan Demak Bintoro pada masa akhir pemerintahan Sultan Trenggana. Setelah Jaka Tingkir menjadi Raja bergelar Sultan Hadiwijaya yang akhirnya mendirikan Kesultanan Pajang, Sutawijaya kemudian dianugerahi tanah Mentaok –Kotagede, Jogja sekarang. Bersama-sama ayahnya ia babat alas kawasan yang kini terkenal dengan kerajinan perak tersebut. Karena keraton Sutawijaya berada di sebelah utara pasar maka dia bergelar Ngabehi Loring Pasar. Setelah Ki Gede Pemanahan meninggal tahun 1575 M, Sutawijaya memberontak ke Pajang saat di Pajang terjadi konflik elite tahun 1582 M dan membuat Mataram merdeka dari Pajang.

Suatu ketika laut selatan Pulau Jawa oleng, menggelegak macam air panas di kuali. Kemilau air laut yang biru, mendadak keruh berbuih mendidih, terguncang gempa. Ikan-ikan berlompatan mati kepanasan. Para jin, setan periperayangan, risau menyaksikan perubahan gejala aneh di segoro kidul (laut selatan), karena gemuruh taufan itu terasa panas-dingin tak menentu sampai menembus dasar laut diantar angin tujuh keliling.
