Menurut sebagian besar ulama, kata quran merupakan bentuk turunan (musytaq) dari kata qara'a, yang berarti 'menghimpun', 'meneliti', dan 'membaca.' Dari sini, istilah Alquran diartikan sebagai 'bacaan.' Alquran menyebut dirinya sendiri dengan berbagai nama. Di antaranya, nama Alquran itu sendiri (surah al-Isra: 9). Kemudain, Alquran juga menyebut dirinya sebagai al-Kitab (surah al-Anbiya: 10), al-Furqan (surah al-Furqan: 1), adz-Dzikr (surah al-Hijr: 9), dan al-Tanzil (surah asy-Syura: 129). Dari nama-nama ini, Alquran dan al-Kitab menjadi yang paling populer di kalangan kaum Muslimin. Kenyataan ini, menurut Manna al-Qaththan dalam buku Mabahits fi 'Ulum Alquran mengandung makna bahwa dalam menjaga dan memelihara otentisitas Alquran, umat Islam mesti memerhatikan dua aspek sekaligus, yaitu bacaan (alquran) dan tulisan (al-kitab). Tak boleh mengandalkan salah satunya, tetapi harus berpegang pada keduanya secara bersamaan. Selain nama-nama seperti dikemukakan di atas, Alquran juga memperkenalkan beberapa sifat dan sebutan yang dilekatkan kepada dirinya. Di antaranya predikat sebagai petunjuk dan pedoman hidup bagi manusia (hudan li al-nas), penawar hati (syifa'), rahmat (rahmah), dan nasihat baik (mau'idhah) (lihat surah at-Taubah: 57).
