Know Your Rights: Inheritance and Property
<p>Current legal structures and social norms allow for financial inequalities that put women at a more vulnerable position, especially after a divorce.</p> <p> </p> <p>In this episode of Musawah podcast, we are joined by Zabib Loro, a feminist, human rights activitst, and researcher from South Sudan. She is the founder and Executive Director of Women for Justice and Equality (formerly IDRA). We also talk to Fatima Seedat, a feminist, Islamic scholar, and women's rights acitvist, who is currently the Associate Professor and Head of Department of African Feminist Studies at the University of Cape Town. We also listen to Rumana Mahomed, an attorney and fiduciary practitioner from South Africa.</p> <p> </p> <p>The guests talk to us about the civil and islamic inheritance laws, as well as social practcies, that affect women’s financial rights after divorce. Who Protects Women from Violence?
<p>It is said that “the revolution starts at home”. One cannot combat the violence in society without combating the violence happening at home. One way to address this cycle of violence is to call for legal reform.</p> <p> </p> <p>In this episode of Musawah podcast, we listen to Hala Al-Karib, an activist and research practitioner from Sudan. She is the Regional Director of the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA). We also listen to Sylvia Noagbesenu, who is a human rights lawyer, a social policy specialist, and a gender equality advocate from Ghana. She is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Initiative for Gender Equality and Development in Africa (IGED-Africa).</p> <p> </p> <p>With Sylvia and Hala, we examine the substantive and transformative measures needed to reform personal status and family laws.
