In the end we discuss the opportunities of medical AI applications in remote areas and especially in developing countries. Tabea had the pleasure to talk to Tahir Bockarie who is working for the National Health Service (NHS) in England as the MedTech and Digital Innovation Manager in the Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC) Team. AI in Neurology with Prof. Dr. Olli Tenovuo
What role can AI play in the diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases such as TBI? traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is an injury that affects how the brain works. According to CDC, TBI is a major cause of death and disability in the United States and many other countries. Anyone can experience a TBI, but data suggest that some groups are at greater risk for getting a TBI or having worse health outcomes after the injury. On this episode, we are joined by Prof. Dr. Olli Tenovuo, professor of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Turku in Finland and a scientific pioneer leading many research efforts in the field of TBI. We dive into different applications of Artificial Intelligence for diagnosing and treating complex diseases such as TBI. We also ask our guest about some challenges in adopting clinical workflow to new technologies and how companies can overcome those challenges by offering innovative solutions. Patients with TBI of different severities have been his main clinical interest since early 1990’s, and during the years he has treated about 6 000 patients with TBI. Since 1996 he has led a multidisciplinary research group on TBIs, which has expanded steadily. Currently his team includes > 40 researchers, 21 of which are PhD students and 7 are post docs. They represent widely different disciplines, such as neurosurgery, neurology, neuroanaesthesiology, neuroradiology, neuropsychology, clinical neurophysiology, psychiatry etc. He has conducted also large international research projects and is currently in a leading position in several trials. Also he has experience on RCTs on the field. His team has a wide collaborative network both nationally and internationally, both in experimental and clinical research.
