El efecto de Rayuela cuando apareció, en 1963, en el mundo de lengua española, fue sísmico. Removío hasta los cimientos las convicciones o prejuicios que escritores y lectores teníamos sobre los medios y los fines del arte de narrar y extendió las fronteras del género hasta límites impensables. Gracias a Rayuela aprendimos que escribir era una manera genial de divertirse que era posible explorar los secretos del mundo y del lenguaje pasándola muy bien y que, jugando, se podían sondear misterios estratos de la vida vedados al conocimiento racional, a la inteligencia lógica, simas de las experiencia a las que nadie puede asomarse sin riesgos graves, como la muerte y la locura. En Rayuela razón y sin razón sueño y vigilia, objetividad y subjetividad, historia y fantasía perdían su condición excluyente, sus fronteras se eclipsaban, dejaban de ser antinomias para confundirse en una sola realidad, por la que ciertos seres privilegiados, como la Maga y Oliveira, y los célebres piantados de sus futuros libros, podían discurrir libremente. (Como muchas parejas lectoras de Rayuela, en los sesenta, Patricia y yo empezamos también a hablar en glíglico, a inventar una jerigonza privada y a traducir a sus restallantes vocablos esotéricos nuestros tiernos secretos).
