What if the most important piece of literature ever written was sitting right in your hands? That is exactly the claim made about Paul's letter to the Romans, and as we begin exploring this extraordinary book together, it becomes clear why so many of history's greatest minds have said so. Romans is not a loose collection of religious thoughts. It is a carefully constructed, brilliantly argued case for the gospel, the good news that by believing in Jesus' life and death for us, we can have an eternal relationship with God. The book opens by establishing its central theme in Romans 1:16-17, where Paul describes the gospel as the very power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes, and reveals a righteousness from God received not by human effort but by faith. From there, Romans walks us through one of the most sobering and honest assessments of the human condition ever written. Chapters 1 through 3 build a meticulous case that every person, regardless of background or religious heritage, stands guilty before God and in desperate need of a righteousness that cannot be earned. The diagnosis is uncomfortable, but it makes the remedy all the more breathtaking. When we arrive at Romans 3:21 and read those two words, 'but now,' we feel the full weight of what the gospel means. A righteousness from God, apart from anything we could do, has been made known. This is not merely the starting point of the Christian life. It is the heartbeat of it, and Romans is about to show us exactly what that means for how we live every single day.
