He completed his degree in Physics at the University of Modena and received his doctorate from Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, where he worked in theoretical condensed matter physics under the supervision of Franco Bassani. He later carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge, where he worked with P. W. Anderson. His career also includes research positions with the Italian Research Council, CNR, at Rome University and Trieste University.
