Zusammen mit Dorfbewohnern half er den Verwundeten so gut es ging, egal welcher Nationalität diese angehörten. Seine Erlebnisse verarbeitete er in seinem Buch »Eine Erinnerung an Solferino«, das er 1862 auf eigene Kosten veröffentlichte und an Herrscherhäuser und ranghohe Militärs in ganz Europa verteilte. Er schlug nicht nur die Gründung von neutralen, nationalen Hilfsgesellschaften vor, die Freiwillige werben, ausbilden und zur Hilfe und Pflege im Kriegsfalle einsetzen sollten, sondern auch Abkommen zum Schutz und zur Versorgung von Verwundeten und Kranken im Krieg. Damit beginnt die lange Geschichte der internationalen Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmond-Bewegung und des Humanitären Völkerrechts.
