Why the US got involved in Vietnam - The Vietnam War
<p>Summary:</p> <p>Vietnam ‘kicked out’ the Japanese using guerrilla warfare in 1945.</p> <p>France tried to re-colonise with $500 million support yearly from the US, but Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh defeated them in 1954 at the battle of Diem Bien Phu.</p> <p>Vietnam was divided at the 17th parallel following the Geneva Agreement.</p> <p>Reason 1 - Containment Policy</p> <p>Reason 2 - Domino Theory</p> <ul> <li>20,000 Vietcong fighters in South Vietnam by 1961</li> </ul> <p>Reason 3 - Domestic Politics</p> <p>Reason 4 - Military Industry Complex</p> <ul> <li>3.5 million people within the defence establishment</li> </ul> <p>Eisenhower pumped $11.6 billion into the Diem government.</p> <p>Diem was replaced by a military government.</p> <p>By 1962, 11,000 military advisers were sent to Vietnam.</p> <p>Hawks and Doves</p> <p>JFK - dove</p> <p>Johnson - hawk</p> <p>The Gulf of Tonkin happened in 1964.</p> <p>US Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and in March 1965 the war began.</p>
