La glicina es el aminoácido más pequeño, es uno de los componentes básicos de las proteínas. Actúa también como un neurotransmisor en el cerebro, lo que permite que las neuronas se comuniquen entre si y modulan la actividad neuronal. A lo largo de los anos varios investigadores se han enfocado en aumentar los niveles de glicina en las sinapsis para encontrar un tratamiento eficaz para la esquizofrenia. Una alternativa es utilizar inhibidores dirigidos al transportador de glicina 1 (GlyT1), una proteína que se encuentra en las membranas de las células neuronales y es responsable de la captura de glicina en las células neuronales. No obstante, el desarrollo de fármacos se había visto obstaculizado porque no se conocía la estructura 3D de GlyT1. Recientemente en Marzo del 2021, se publicaron unos resultados en la revista Nature que presentan la estructura tridimensional y los mecanismos de inhibición del transportador GlyT1. Este descubrimiento permite entender a mayor profundidad la regulación de glicina en el cerebro y nos brinda la oportunidad de encontrar fármacos eficaces que inhiban la función de GlyT1 no solo para el tratamiento de esquizofrenia, sino que también de otros trastornos mentales.
