Cognitive Distortions Ep 2
<p><strong>Cognitive distortions are habitual ways of thinking that are often inaccurate and negatively biased. Cognitive distortions usually develop over time in response to adverse events. There are at least 10 common distorted thinking patterns that have been identified by researchers.</strong></p> <p><strong>Cognitive Distortions – erroneous patterns of thinking. Examples:</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>All-or-Nothing Thinking;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Overgeneralizing;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Discounting the Positive;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Jumping to Conclusions;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Mind Reading;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Fortune Telling;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Magnification (Catastrophizing) and Minimizing;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Emotional Reasoning;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Should Statements;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Labeling and Mislabeling;<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Personalization.</strong></li> </ul> <p><strong><br> Interventions: CBT treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking patterns. These strategies might include:</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Learning to recognize one's distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality.<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Gaining a better understanding of the behavior and motivation of others.<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.<br> </strong></li> <li><strong>Learning to develop a greater sense of confidence is one's own abilities.<br> </strong></li> </ul> <p><strong>CBT treatment also usually involves efforts to change behavioral patterns.
