Women in the GAA

Our club and clubs all around the world are full of women who are just as avid sportspeople and supporters of the GAA as their male counterparts. But if you listened to our first episode on the history of the GAA, you may have heard that in the strictest sense, the GAA is an organization for men. Currently, the GAA has sister organizations—the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association—that govern the sports for women. So how do we reconcile the essential part of our games and clubs that women represent with this governance structure? To dig into this, and the unique perspectives of women in modern Gaelic games, we speak with Dr. Aoife Lane, Head of the Department of Sport & Health Sciences at the Athlone Institute of Technology, and Bridget McCarthy, one of the DC Gaels' camogie coaches.

Learn more about the DC Gaels on our website!

A brief history of the GAA

For a lot of folks, especially Americans who join hurling and Gaelic football clubs, those three letters on our jerseys don’t necessarily mean much to us beyond the local club we represent. But the GAA is an organization with a lot of interesting history, and it’s always good to know where you came from. So, today, a look at the history of the GAA with Paul Rouse, a professor at the UCD School of history.

Learn more about the DC Gaels on our website!
