Gen X Jersey is the writer’s reading room, hosted by Melissa, a writer, radio host and lifelong observer of people, culture and change.
The stories behind her writing don’t always belong in the final draft. Some lead somewhere unexpected. Others stand on their own. Here, she writes them down and reads them aloud. Recorded in one take.
These are the experiences, observations and ideas that fuel her work. Whether they eventually become essays, chapters or stories told only here remains to be seen.

Melissa looks back at a turning point, one that left her family unprepared for the troubles ahead, and whether pressing for an answer to one question might have changed everything. It seems she didn't know it was a turning point until it was too late. Don't you hate it when that happens?

Head First
Melissa has been sharing more personal stories lately, but not this one. This story has been getting airtime for years.
It’s her best cocktail party story, about the first time she went into New York City alone. She was newly divorced and feeling pretty good about it, right up until a stranger gave her two black eyes and a group of Good Samaritans got too wrapped up in the answer to the question, “Is anyone here with you?”
The answer was no. Which, until about 30 seconds earlier, had been the whole point.
In “Head First,” Melissa revisits the day a small act of independence got unexpectedly literal and left her wondering if being on her own was, in fact, going to bring her to her knees.

In Sickness
In this episode of the new chapter of Gen X Jersey, she looks back on the secret her soon-to-be ex husband asked her to keep, the help he refused and her decision not to tell anyone. A year later, the problem returned far more seriously, leaving her to question what her silence may have cost.
Against the end of a 22-year marriage, Melissa reflects on what it means to promise “in sickness and in health,” then lose the right to see that promise through. She shares what it felt like to stand outside the crisis, caught between guilt, relief and resentment while someone else became the person beside him.

The Long Game
What began as a story about addiction and grief became the path that led to Melissa's latest book.
In this episode of this new chapter of Gen X Jersey, she shares the deeply personal story behind her writing, and why she's still willing to play the long game. Melissa grew up believing that you did the work first. You wrote the book, recorded the album, built the business or learned the craft. Then, if the work was good enough, you found an audience.
Today, the order is reversed reversed, they expect you to build an audience before you get support for your body of work. She shares why she still believes in the traditional publishing path and why Gen X Jersey is the place where the stories behind her new book can be told first.

This Must Be the Place
The game has changed, and host Melissa has decided to stop chasing it.
Taking the advice of a trusted source, she's done trying to create what she thinks people want to hear. Instead, she's betting that the right audience will find her by simply being herself.
Inspired by a theme from This Must Be the Place (both the song and the movie), Melissa is done waiting until everything is figured out. Like so much of the world she grew up in, the creative industries have turned the old rules upside down. Today it feels like packaging comes before the product.
She'd rather let you experience the product.
If building an audience means she can finally stop saving her stories for "someday" and start telling them now, then maybe that's one part of our post-Gen X, digital, capitalist world she can actually get behind.
Welcome to Season 3.
Buckle up.
Melissa's got stories.

Jimmy Carter Saw it Coming: Chapter 1.2
Part 2 of Chapter 1 firmly drives Gen X Jersey into its new direction, blending personal memories with commentary on media, culture and modern life through a Gen X lens.
What begins with memories of newspapers and local TV news in 1970s New Jersey leads to Jimmy Carter’s famous 1979 “malaise speech” and the surprising realization that parts of it feel far more relevant today than they did at the time.
Even if you don’t remember the speech, or Jimmy Carter at all, you may be surprised by how familiar some of it sounds now.
Melissa brings a soundtrack to this to life on her companion radio show, Gen X Jersey, Wednesday nights at 10PM on Radio Garden State. Tune in for a playlist curated to match this chapter or find the “Gen X Jersey” playlists on Amazon Music anytime.

Ep 8: Thanks, I Needed That
After last week’s Let’s Get Sad, Melissa flips the script.
In this episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow, she sets out to find the songs that bring her joy and realizes they’re much harder to name than the ones that make her feel something.
Less about lyrics and more about energy, this playlist is built around the songs that get you out of your own head and invite you to just move.
The discussion veers to why joy is harder to catalog than other emotions, and why it might be worth paying closer attention to the songs that simply make things feel lighter. This ep isn't about the songs you grew up with; it's about whatever works.

Ep. 7: Let's Get Sad
“Oh my God… is this what adulthood is?”
One question sparks an hour of music and reflection in this episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow. Melissa builds a “feel the feels” playlist and asks listeners to do something simple, but rare: stop, listen, and actually feel it.
It’s not all heavy. There’s honesty, a little perspective from musicians , and a reminder that even the sad songs can leave you with something lighter.
Season 1 is wrapping up, and the show is evolving.
Same name. New direction.

Ep. 6 Spring Break
Melissa hosts from her Spring Break road trip and follows up on last week’s Rock Star: INXS episode with a couple of unexpected calls to the show.
One comes from former contestant Marty Casey, who shares his connection to New Jersey and previews the upcoming reunion show. She also teases a message from a reality TV producer who worked on Rock Star: INXS and got his start in the early days of Survivor and American Idol, hinting at a future interview.
With a shorter show this week, the music took the lead.

Ep. 5: Back to 2005: Rock Star INXS Revisited
Melissa goes deeper into her memories of Rock Star: INXS, stopping just short of full fangirl with a few well-placed facts along the way. She also clears up a miscommunication on the call-in line.
In this After Show, she revisits what made the series feel different from everything else on TV at the time. It wasn’t about becoming famous. It was about earning a place in an iconic rock band with a legacy to protect.
She reflects on what the contestants went through and what happened after the show wrapped, once the cameras were gone.
If you remember it, this will take you right back. If you don’t, the music alone is worth it.

Ep. 4: I Should be Fired Immediately
Melissa goes deeper into the artists from this week’s episode, talks about why music never really disappears, and how hard it’s become to discover something new in a streaming world. She also calls out her own technical mistakes and invites listeners to find the one she missed.
nd yes, she also addresses the lack of phone calls coming in. You're stuck with her until you finally decide to be part of the conversation!

Ep. 3 Who Decides the Future of Rock and Roll?
A voicemail about a Bon Jovi wing in a New Jersey high school sparks a conversation about who’s shaping the future of rock and roll. Melissa also revisits previous comments Billy Squier’s, as corrected by a caller and the story of the song “Harder on a Woman,” and shares a Jersey-era Bon Jovi story from the 1980s. As always, she ends with music from the quieter side of modern rock.

Melissa recaps the latest Gen X Jersey radio episode and the listener voicemail that sparked a conversation about how music travels between generations. The discussion also takes a surprising detour into the strange and infamous history of singer Claudine Longet after Melissa discovers one of her albums in her mom’s record collection. Along the way, there’s also a look back at what concerts felt like in 1989 compared with today.

Ep. 1: And so it begins...
In the debut episode of Gen X Jersey: The Aftershow, Melissa unpacks the cultural threads behind Episode 1, starting with Elvis Costello and his defiant performance of Radio Radio on Saturday Night Live. From there, she revisits the launch of MTV on August 1, 1981, including the "second" song ever played on the station and the split between early cable-subscribers-only cool and top radio hits like Jessie's Girl.
She reflects on taste, rebellion, record store culture and the difference between what “everyone” was listening to and the artists that she remembers as her own musical identity, from Roxy Music to XTC. Melissa also introduces the idea behind the Blue Light Special segment of the show, where she invites introspective and asks you to "Put the Phone Down, Close Your Eyes and Listen."
