There are Rivers in the Sky by Elif Shafak

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/660182 (https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/660182) to listen full audiobooks. Title: There are Rivers in the Sky Author: Elif Shafak Narrator: Olivia Vinall, Elif Shafak Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 16 hours 48 minutes Release date: August 8, 2024 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 5 of Total 4 Genres: Historical Publisher's Summary: Brought to you by Penguin. This audiobook is read by Olivia Vinall, and Elif Shafak reads the Note to Reader at the end of the story. This is the story of one lost poem, two great rivers, and three remarkable lives – all connected by a single drop of water. In the ruins of Nineveh, that ancient city of Mesopotamia, there lies hidden in the sand fragments of a long-forgotten poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh. In Victorian London, an extraordinary child is born at the edge of the dirt-black Thames. Arthur’s only chance of escaping poverty is his brilliant memory. When his gift earns him a spot as an apprentice at a printing press, Arthur’s world opens up far beyond the slums, with one book soon sending him across the seas: Nineveh and Its Remains. In 2014 Turkey, Narin, a Yazidi girl living by the River Tigris, waits to be baptised with water brought from the holy sit of Lalish in Iraq. The ceremony is cruelly interrupted, and soon Narin and her grandmother must journey across war-torn lands in the hope of reaching the sacred valley of their people. In 2018 London, broken-hearted Zaleekhah, a hydrologist, moves to a houseboat on the Thames to escape the wreckage of her marriage. Zaleekhah foresees a life drained of all love and meaning – until an unexpected connection to her homeland changes everything. A dazzling feat of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of our time, Elif Shafak’s There are Rivers in the Sky is a rich, sweeping novel that spans centuries, continents and cultures, entwined by rivers, rains, and waterdrops: ‘Water remembers. It is humans who forget.’ ***** ‘Elif Shafak is a unique and powerful voice in world literature’ Ian McEwan 'An extraordinary novel, fresh and cleansing, like the rain bouncing off the metal roof of our lives.' Colum McCann 'Make place for Elif Shafak on your bookshelf. Make place for her in your heart too. You won't regret it' Arundhati Roy 'One of the best writers in the world today' Hanif Kureishi 'A brilliant, unforgettable novel' Mary Beard © Elif Shafak 2024 (P) Penguin Audio 2024

Yorùbá Boy Running by Biyi Bandele

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/673850 (https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/673850) to listen full audiobooks. Title: Yorùbá Boy Running Author: Biyi Bandele Narrator: Chiwetel Ejiofor Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 7 hours 15 minutes Release date: July 4, 2024 Genres: Historical Publisher's Summary: Brought to you by Penguin. Yorùbá Boy Running charts Samuel Ajayi Crowther's miraculous journey from slave to liberator, boy to man, running to resisting 'Run, Àjàyí, run!' The day the Malian slave traders invaded the Nigerian town of Òsogùn, thirteen-year-old Àjàyí's life was split in two. Before, there was his childhood, surrounded by friends and family, watched over by the ancient Yorùbá gods of forest and water, earth and sky. After: capture, slavery - and release, into the service of a new god, his own culture left far behind. So Àjàyí becomes Samuel Crowther - missionary, linguist, minister - and abolitionist: driven to negotiate against his own people to end the miserable trade in human beings which destroyed his family. Drawing on the prolific writings of Samuel Ajayi Crowther, Biyi Bándélé has created a many-voiced, kaleidoscopic portrait of an extraordinary man. From the heart-stopping drama of Àjàyí's last day of freedom to the farcical intrigue of the Òsogùn court; from a meeting with Queen Victoria; to his consecration as the first African Bishop of the Anglican Church, his journey, like all great odysseys, circles back to where he began. By turns witty, moving and quietly political, Biyi Bándélé's reimagining of Crowther's life is a brilliant tour de force. WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM WOLE SOYINKA 'A true artist. A brilliant writer. An original thinker' Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie ‘Biyi Bándélé had a prolifically talented and creative mind, shown in everything he touched. Yorùbá Boy Running is no exception’ Chiwitel Ejiofor ©2024 Biyi Bandele (P)2024 Penguin Audio Cover artwork Chris Ofili, Blind Leading Blind, 2005 © The artist.
