Being an Obsessive Otaku May Make Your Dreams Come True It was his obsession towards Japanese video games, manga, and anime that brought Benjamin Boas all the way from Connecticut USA across the world to Japan, where he didn’t speak the language and didn’t know a soul. Today he is a translator, lecturer, and the author of two books. He works with governments, companies, and universities, and was a Cool Japan Ambassador, appointed by the Japanese government, until the program ended just recently in July 2022. But he will be the first person to tell you all the things that were not so cool about the Cool Japan campaign, despite all the potential he saw in it. He even published an article about it in a monthly magazine published by THE Studio Ghibili, and it was his honesty about the campaign that got him the Ambassador position. We will also talk about how his teenage dreams came true when he was actually paid to watch thousands of hours of Anime, or the time when he was hired to train a Hollywood actor Aikido, a form of martial art, for a major American television series.
