Airplane Mode EP3 - Silence Before the Work
<p>Most people respond to big tasks by doing more. More planning, more preparation, more hustle. But Jesus modeled something entirely different. In Mark chapter one, right after healing crowds and casting out demons, He rose before dawn and withdrew to a desolate place to pray. He did not review what went well or map out His next move. He got quiet before the Father. This was not a reaction to crisis. It was a foundation He built into His rhythm before the demands of the day could take over.</p><p><br></p><p>The place Jesus chose matters. Mark uses the word eremos, referring to a desolate, isolated place with no interruptions. Jesus had already been in the wilderness during His temptation, and yet He returned to that kind of place. The wilderness was not only a place of testing. It was also a place of deep connection with God. Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer understood this well, noting that solitude and community are partners, not opposites. Stepping away intentionally is not about avoiding people or responsibilities. It is about preparing yourself completely for what is coming.</p><p><br></p><p>When the disciples found Jesus and told Him that everyone was looking for Him, He responded without apology and without rushing. He already knew the direction because He had already talked to the Father. That kind of steadiness is what silence produces. It pushes back against the cultural pressure to be constantly available and to measure your worth by how much you are doing. Your worth is not measured by your availability. It is measured by your connection to God. Whatever big task or new responsibility is in front of you right now, bring it to Him first. His perspective may save you days of unnecessary effort and redirect you toward the path He already has prepared.</p><p><br></p>

Airplane Mode EP2 - The Wilderness of Grief
<p>Grief is one of the most universal human experiences, yet our culture often pressures us to push through it, stay strong, or move on before we are ready. But the life of Jesus offers a different and far more honest model. When Jesus received the news that John the Baptist had been executed, He withdrew to a desolate place by Himself. John was not just a public figure to Jesus. He was family, the one who baptized Him and called heaven to open over the Jordan River. Jesus, fully God and fully man, still felt the weight of that loss and responded by stepping away.</p><p><br></p><p>Withdrawing to grieve is not weakness and it is not a failure of faith. It is wisdom. The Greek word used in Matthew 14 for that desolate place is eremos, meaning a wilderness, a place removed from the noise and demands of others. Jesus went there not to hide, but to be with the Father. That is the paradox of grief and solitude. You go alone, but you discover you were never truly alone. Healing cannot begin until we stop sealing the wound. Just as a scar marks a healed injury that no longer bleeds, grief that is properly processed leaves a mark but no longer pulses with fresh pain.</p><p><br></p><p>Solitude and community are not competitors in grief. They are partners. After Jesus withdrew, He returned to the crowds, fed five thousand people, and then withdrew again to pray. The pattern is clear: solitude, then ministry, then solitude again. For those walking through loss, the invitation is the same. Find your desolate place, whether it is a quiet room, a walk in the woods, or a drive in silence, and bring your grief before God. He does not wait for you to finish grieving before He shows up. He meets you right in the middle of it.</p><p><br></p>

Airplane Mode EP1 - Solitude Before the Decision
<p>We live in a world that rewards fast decisions, but Jesus modeled something different. In Luke 6:12-16, before choosing His twelve apostles, He withdrew to a mountain and spent the entire night in prayer. He did not rush. He did not poll His followers or weigh His options quickly. He sought the Father first, and only after that night of prayer did He come down and make His choice. That sequence, prayer before decision, is a pattern worth following in every significant moment of life.</p><p><br></p><p>Three things shaped the way Jesus approached this decision. First, the place mattered. Mountains throughout Scripture are where God meets people and speaks clearly, from Moses in Exodus 3 to Elijah in 1 Kings 19. Jesus was intentional about going somewhere set apart. Second, the silence mattered. In Matthew 6:6, Jesus instructed His followers to shut the door and pray to the Father in secret. Constant noise and distraction make it nearly impossible to hear from God. Silence is not emptiness. It is where the voice of God has room to be heard. Third, the prayer shaped the decision itself. Too often we make a choice and then ask God to bless it. Jesus reversed that order entirely.</p><p><br></p><p>It is also worth noting that the team Jesus chose after that night of prayer was not a smooth or easy group. He chose Peter, who would deny Him. He chose Judas, who would betray Him. Solitude and prayer do not guarantee an easy road, but they do guarantee a purposeful one. Every one of those choices ultimately served the glory of the Father. Whatever decision you are currently facing, whether it involves a relationship, a move, a career, or a crossroads you cannot yet see past, it deserves more than a rushed moment between notifications. Find your mountain place, bring the decision before God in genuine prayer, and let Him lead before you move.</p>
