יון למדני בסוגיא לשונות במסכת קידושין (ה:). הרב חוזר אל הסוגיא בשבועות (כו:) ומראה כי המוקד של רב ששת הוא בכוונת האדם. הרב מנגיד זאת לסוגיא בקידושין (ה:) המדגישה חשיבות בנוסח עצמו, מעבר לכוונת האדם. הרב מבחין בשיטת רבי יוסי בין קידושין וגיטין שבהם צריך הקשר, מפני שקיימת דעת אחרת, לבין תרומות ומעשרות שבהן אין צורך מפני שמדובר על עניין אישי. הברכת שמואל רב דן בשיטת רבי יהודה המדגישה את חשיבות הנוסח עצמו, מחדד את המחלוקת על ידי קושיית ר"ע איגר, מפרש את שיטת רבי כפשרה, ומסיים בעיון בדברי הרמב"ם.

דין ידות
הרב פותח בנדרים ונזירות (רמב"ם נזירות א:ה, וירושלמי), שם ידות באה להשלים את ה"מבטא בשפתיים", ואין לשפה תפקיד אינפורמטיבי אלא מאגי בלבד. לעומת זאת, בקידושין (ו.) אין צורך בדיבור כדי לקדש, ומהרמב"ם (אישות פ"ג) משמע כי תפקיד הלשון בקידושין הוא אינפורמטיבי. על כן, מה עניין קידושין לידות? הרב מציע את הבנת הברכת שמואל (סי' א), לפיו כאשר יש לשון בקידושין – הרי שהיא חלק ממעשה הקידושין. הרב מוסיף לכך את דברי הבית יעקב, לפיהם מלבד דעת ומודעות במעשה הקידושין צריך גם רצון. הרב מקשה כי בנדרים ידות עובדות רק כאשר הביטוי מובן מעט, ועל כן מבחין בין דיבור לשפה. בהמשך הרב עוסק בביאורו של הברכת שמואל לרמב"ם, מציע תיאור של התפתחות המושג ידות, בשילוב עם טענות מחקריות, ולאחר מכן מציע את הבנתו ברמב"ם.
