The Socialist heritage of South Yemen and the role of family law in the Arab nation-state

Hummus mit Hintergrund is back with another English episode. Yemen is not only the state that is reported on every now and then because the war is still ongoing. In this episode Elham Manea (Twitter @ElhamManea) and Dominik talk about the Yemeni predecessor states and especially the interesting history of South Yemen, its socialist heritage and the gender relations within the first real socialist state in the MENA region. Additionally, they address the Yemeni unification process and its implications for women’s rights and Elham Manea gives first-hand information from her ongoing research on the recent situation in Yemen. Die Westsahara im Spannungsfeld zwischen Selbst- und Fremdbestimmung

Westsahara, schon mal gehört? In dieser Episode spreche ich mit Erik (Twitter @VollmannErik) über ein Gebiet, das weniger mediale Aufmerksamkeit bekommt als es eigentlich verdient. Die Westsahara ist eines der Gebiete, deren völkerrechtlicher Status bis heute nicht abschließend geklärt ist und deshalb immer wieder Schauplatz politischer und militärischer Machtkämpfe war und immer noch ist. Nach einer kurzen historischen Einleitung in das Thema der Episode erläutert Erik die marokkanische Perspektive auf die Westsahara. Darüber hinaus erhalten wir exklusive Einblicke in die Dezentralisierungs- und Regionalisierungsforschung. Ist spannender als es klingt, versprochen! Arab - Islamic - Muslim - Secular: What about Feminisms in the MENA?

Time for the first English episode of Hummus mit Hintergrund! What is Islamic, Muslim, Arab and Secular Feminism and why is it such an important topic, especially for people from the so-called west? How can we assess the tendency to discredit well-established feminist discourses in the MENA region by referring to western, liberal forms of feminism? Starting with a brief historical introduction into the late 19th and early 20th century and especially into the particularities of feminist thought at that time, the episode is trying to make sense of political and societal developments with regard to women’s movements and feminisms. In a lively discussion Dominik and his guests, Nourhan and Sabrina, touch upon urgent topics, such as the labelling of feminisms and the framing tendencies of certain kinds of feminisms. Moreover, the episode picks up the most recent court decision on the headscarf in Germany and puts it into the larger context of being a Muslim and feminist woman in Germany.
