Perché gli hamburger si chiamano così? Tra il 1800 e il 1900 molti poveri europei furono costretti a emigrare negli Stati Uniti. La traversata più economica partiva da Amburgo, in Germania, ed era offerta dalla compagnia Hamburg- Amerika line, i cui cuochi dovevano inventare un pasto veloce e poco costoso». La risposta ideale era un trito di carne bovina insaporito con aromi e cipolle, e cotto alla griglia. Ebbe tanto successo, anche per il prezzo contenuto, che una volta sbarcati nel Nuovo Mondo, i passeggeri cominciarono a cucinarlo anche a casa dando al piatto il nome della compagnia di navigazione. E così l’hamburger, l’unico tipo di carne che molti potevano permettersi, diventò un simbolo della cucina a stelle e strisce. Solo successivamente, verso la fine dell’Ottocento, la carne fu rinchiusa fra due fette di pane.
