La fiaba fa parte della raccolta Una notte di Hanukkah, pubblicata in Italia da Einaudi Ragazzi che qui ringraziamo.<br />Nato Radzymin, in Polonia, nel 1904 e morto a Miami, in Florida, nel 1991, il premio Nobel Isaac Bashevis Singer appartiene alla perduta “yiddishland”, il mondo dei piccoli e poveri villaggi ebraici dell’Europa orientale spazzato via prima dai pogrom e poi dalla shoah. La sua lingua è quel connubio tra ebraico, tedesco e lingue slave che va sotto il nome di yiddish, i suoi personaggi sono figure di ebrei spesso schiacciati da un ambiente ostile, come i due bambini protagonisti di questa storia che si ritrovano, orfani, tra le macerie del ghetto di Varsavia. <br />La luce delle candele di Hanukkah infonde forza e coraggio ai due giovanissimi protagonisti del racconto e rappresenta l’augurio del MEB a tutti in questi giorni comunque di festa nel difficile periodo che stiamo vivendo.
