Il 15 febbraio del 1999 Abdullah Öcalan viene sequestrato in Kenya. Presidente, nonchè tra i fondatori, del Partito dei Lavoratori del Kursdistan, Öcalan si trovava nell'ambasciata greca a Nairobi. Obbligato a fuggire dalla Siria aveva provato, tramite paesi dell'Unione Europea e della Nato, a portare avanti una proposta di pace. Il sequestro ferma tale processo.
