   Ep 12: ADHD and Distraction

Someone once said that if you don’t have ADHD right now, you’re not paying attention. It’s stayed with us ever since. In this episode, Joe and Lauran take ADHD out of the dry neurological map and into lived experience. We look past executive function and dopamine to ask what it feels like to have a mind with fewer filters, in a world built to fight for your attention, and what happens to a child who is told, again and again, how they should be. Along the way, we dive into: Two Maps: The clinical picture of what’s gone wrong, and the lived picture of a sensitive, porous, hyper-receptive mind. Maybe it isn’t too little attention, but too much. The Tyranny of Should: How every “sit still” and “be quiet” bends a child like wire around a growing plant, and why we should change the environment, not blame the leaves. The Mask: Jung’s persona, Winnicott’s false self, and why so many adults diagnosed later describe hiding the feeling that there’s something weird about them. What Is Your Nervous System Telling You?: Gabor Maté’s Scattered Minds, the shift from anxiety and depression to ADHD and autism, and the beige-living-room retreat from an overstimulating world. Three Paths After Diagnosis: Relational therapy to heal the shame, a translator between neurodivergent and neurotypical worlds, and a body practice that lets feelings move. Cats purr, dogs shake it off, and no, it doesn’t have to be meditation. Lauran brings a biopsychosocial lens, PMS as a lesson in masking, and a healthy suspicion of anyone who tells you to “just meditate”. Joe draws on years of music work with children with ADHD and on depth psychology, and lands on something simple: what children need most is someone steady who slows down and stays. For anyone with a diagnosis (early or late), anyone parenting a child who feels like “too much”, or anyone wondering why it’s so hard to sit still right now. This episode is not a substitute for medical advice. You’ll be fine, just listen.

Ep 11: Coming of Age: The Missing Threshold

You can't think your way into maturity. Every culture before ours seemed to know this, and built a threshold to prove it. In this episode, Joe and Lauran ask what happens to a society that has lost its rites of passage. Prompted by a widely shared news story of an alleged sexual assault at a US university, and by a certain immaturity coming out of Silicon Valley, they trace a line from Jung's eternal youth and ancient initiation rituals to frat houses, biohacking and robots, and ask where responsibility really comes from. Along the way, we dive into: The Missing Threshold: Why traditional cultures took boys from comfort into the wild, and how awe gives rise to reverence, respect and responsibility. Hollowed-Out Rituals: The first pint, the driving licence, the first sexual experience. We kept the milestones and lost what made them sacred. Patriarchy or Initiation?: Is much of what we call toxic masculinity really immature masculinity? And is patriarchy what happens when the masculine goes uninitiated? The Other Coming of Age: Girls made emotionally responsible far too young, and why women's rite of passage now may be setting that down. The Leap of Faith: Kierkegaard, psychedelics without ceremony, and whether we're building machines to carry the responsibility we won't. Lauran brings the anger and exhaustion many women are feeling, and a challenge to men's spaces that leave women's voices out. Joe goes looking for what sits beneath the lack of responsibility, through myth, philosophy and depth psychology. Together they land somewhere hopeful: we may have lost the forest and the ritual, but we still have each other. Men and women, sitting across from one another, brave enough to terrify each other with the truth. For anyone raising boys, exhausted by the headlines, or wondering what growing up asks of us. Content note: this episode discusses sexual assault. You'll be fine - just listen.

Ep 10: The Algorithm: Window to the Psyche

I have a confession: I love my social media algorithm. It is a perfectly curated, slightly terrifying window into my insane and inquiring mind. In this episode, Joe and Lauran open up the hood on the algorithm to explore how recommendation engines act as a battleground for human attention. We’re tracing the path from basic neurobiology, dopamine loops, threat responses, and amygdala hijacks, to Jungian depth psychology, exploring how the feed acts as a mirror for our collective shadow. Along the way, we dive into: The Dark Side of the Force: How modern algorithms exploit fear, outrage, and tribal division to keep us isolated. Making the Unconscious Conscious: Using your feed not as a doomscroll, but as an intentional window into your own psyche. The Quickening: Is the algorithm driving us toward our personal and collective "rock bottom" at an accelerated pace? Sovereignty & Responsibility: Reclaiming agency, intentionality, and connection in a world designed to pull us apart. If the feed is a window into the psyche, the ultimate question becomes: who is actually making the choices in your life, you, or your neurochemistry? Join us as we ask the hard, curious questions with empathy, kindness, and a little bit of spice. Drop into the depths with us... You’ll be fine. Just listen

Ep 9: Music Festivals, Ecology and The Soul w Glenn

From the emergence of Woodstock in 1969 to the sprawling fields of modern gatherings, our collective psyche remains deeply enamoured with the music festival. In this episode of In the Depths, hosts Joseph Madden and Lauran Ware sit down with Glenn Watson - festival enthusiast, contributor of 45 years to explore the deeper psychological and ecological roots of why we gather. Is our urge to head into fields and forests every summer merely a modern desire to party, or an ancestral calling? We examine how the emotional weight and core function of the festival experience depend on Mircea Eliade’s concept of sacred time and space, where crossing the gate ruptures ordinary, linear clock-time and steps us into cyclical, mythic rhythms, alongside the somatic grounding of physical reality like chopping firewood, setting up solar power, establishing shared conscious intentions, and stripping away performative social avatars to allow true psychological transformation to take root. Join us as we explore how stepping off the grid allows us to move past the noise, drop the persona, and return to ordinary life with true soulcraft. You’ll be fine – just listen. In this episode, we discuss: The Sacred Threshold: How crossing into an off-grid festival space acts as an axis mundi, shifting us out of linear clock-time into cyclical, ancestral time. Epigenetic Memory: The deep-seated human need to gather around fires, drum, and connect under open skies as an inherited biological call. The Corporate Shadow: The environmental and psychological toll of mega-festivals, disposable mindsets, and the transformation of attendees from active participants into passive consumers. The Decay of the Archetype: How events like Burning Man risk losing their anarchist soul to tech capital, VIP enclosures, and social media performance. Somatic Work & Soulcraft: Why dealing with physical realities—solar batteries, firewood, and hard mechanics—forces objective humility on the ego and opens the door for genuine emotional healing. Bringing the Gold Home: How to integrate the lessons of community, self-reliance, and ritual back into ordinary Monday-morning life and the need for conscious capitalism.

Ep 8: Gender Wars #1, Archetypal feminine: Exploring Anima Suppression and Integration

Society is locked in a deeply polarized cultural friction, yet beneath the modern "gender wars" lies a psychological and structural restructuring of human connection. Joe and Lauran explore why modern relationships feel increasingly fraught, to examine the hidden fault lines of gender dynamics, economic shifts, and historical trauma. Rather than viewing these tensions as random internet toxicity, this episode traces how unhealed pain, societal changes, and the repression of the self show up in our daily lives. Touching on everything from sweeping cultural friction to modern phenomena like the incel subculture and the 4B movement. Defining the Gender Wars: Tracing the historical continuum and structural shifts, from industrial disruptions and the 1960s sexual revolution to digital echo chambers, that turned the interpersonal space into a political battleground. The Psychology of Anima and Animus: Unpacking Carl Jung’s concepts of the unconscious masculine and feminine principles, examining how they drive internal splitting and why classical theories must be updated for a modern world. Deconstructing Gender Binaries: Synthesizing Jung with Judith Butler and Deleuze and Guattari to view fixed gender roles not as innate blueprints, but as socially constructed performances shaped by cultural taboos and heavy repression. Trauma and the Collective Psyche: Exploring how transgenerational trauma, historical neglect, war, and systemic stress, alters human physiology. The Path to Integration: Looking at why split inner opposites project outward as toxic rivalries, and how moving past binary traps toward an inner union (syzygy) can help us finally meet each other across the divide. Lauran brings a sharp, embodied critique of how cultural roles get locked down and commercialised, while Joe pushes the conversation toward psychological depth, archetypal frameworks, and the hidden power structures built into our collective psyche. Together, they ask what it takes to look past rigid ideology and map a healthier landscape for how we live, work, and love together. Perfect for anyone exhausted by cultural polarisation, curious about the psychological undercurrents of modern gender politics, or looking for a deeper, more human way to understand the divide. If you've ever wondered why modern relationships feel so radically complex, this conversation gets to the heart of it. ‘You’ll be fine - Just Listen’

Ep 7: Dating Apps,The Commodification of Modern Love

Dating apps promise connection, but what if their real product is validation? Joe and Lauran argue that modern romance has quietly been turned into a high-stakes marketplace, where algorithms, status, and swipe ratios shape who gets seen, who gets chosen, and who disappears. They trace how dating moved from community-based introductions and meeting people in the wild to a world of paid platforms, machine-learning matchmaking, and curated avatars. Along the way, they unpack the bizarre logic behind app culture, from Tinder's old ELO-style ranking to the way carpet-bomb swiping can actually lower your visibility. Why apps can feel less like romance and more like admin How digital dating detaches people from community and accountability Why rejection, ghosting, and endless choice can become emotionally anesthetizing What "look maxing," validation-seeking, and status signaling reveal about modern desire Why the rise of apps may be deepening gender tension instead of easing it Lauran brings a sharp, embodied critique of how love gets commodified, while Joe pushes the conversation toward algorithms, unconscious dynamics, and the hidden power structures built into the platforms themselves. Together, they ask whether dating apps are helping us find love or training us to avoid discomfort at all costs. They also explore the cultural stakes: declining birth rates, the collapse of organic social spaces, the difference between transactional connection and real eros, and why a generation raised on curated profiles may be losing the muscle for messy, human intimacy.Perfect for anyone who has ever felt exhausted by the app cycle, suspicious of the swipe economy, or curious about what happens when love is treated like a product. If you've ever wondered why modern dating feels so strangely hollow, this conversation gets to the heart of it.

Ep 6: Intergenerational Inheritance (Beyond Trauma)

Unlock a new perspective on your family history and move beyond the pathologizing lens of "generational trauma." In this thought-provoking episode, therapists Joseph and Lauran dive deep into what it truly means to inherit the past, mapping inheritance across layered dimensions, from everyday behavioral influences and epigenetics to Jungian psychodynamics and perhaps even the nature of the soul. Joseph and Lauran unpack the hidden influences on our lives, exploring how we inherit not just survival scars, but also a blueprint for flourishing, a cultural memory, and a somatic "knowing" that precedes logic. How do our bodies and behaviors mirror our parents and grandparents, and what are the archetypal currents that shape us. Together, they break down the four levels of intergenerational inheritance: The Behavioral Blueprint: Examining learned family scripts, conflict styles, and coping habits passed down through modeling and micro-expressions. The Biological & Epigenetic Layer: Revealing how historical adversity may get under the skin, and why we remain malleable and responsive to healing and somatic change. The Jungian Psychogenetic Layer: Looking at archetypes as noumenal categories and exploring the collective unconscious as a phylogenetic reservoir containing encoded instructions for wholeness. The Spiritual & Cultural Inheritance: Tuning into ancestral connections and turning personal history into a conscious spiritual/emotional gift. Discover how therapy acts as a modern update to an ancient adaptations, that while distress can be passed down, the capacity for resilience, and healing travels right alongside it. Whether you're a therapist, a deep thinker, or anyone curious about the invisible threads connecting past and future generations, this episode encourages you to rewrite your narrative and reclaim your heritage.

   Ep 5: Types of Therapy

Episode 4: Therapy Modalities & The Modern Psyche What if using logic and coping strategies in therapy is actually helping us intellectualize raw emotional pain rather than feeling it? In this candid conversation, therapists Lauran and Joseph peruse the modern mental health landscape to look past marketing buzzwords and get curious about the true nature of healing. From cognitive quick-fixes to human relationship and bodily release, they explore what surface-level approaches miss, and where therapy is heading next. Exploring the undercurrents of psychological healing through a depth lens, they examine the space between surface symptom management and true integration: CBT vs. Unconscious Depth: Why surface-level thought tracking can act as a "cerebral bypass," and how depth work engages the hidden emotional dynamics beneath our conscious patterns. The Humanistic Shift: How humanism brought the most essential element back into the therapeutic room, the relationship itself, and why genuine human connection precedes technique. The Somatic Turn: Why the body is the often-overlooked frontier of healing, and how bottom-up somatic work releases trauma locked deep within the nervous system. Bridging the Silos: Why nothing is stopping us from integrating the relational, somatic, and depth perspectives. This episode is essential listening for anyone trying to navigate their own therapy journey, practitioners curious about the future of practice, and anyone who has ever felt that simply "talking about" their problems sometimes wasn't enough to actually transform them. Lauran and Joseph illuminate the path toward a more integrated model of care: honoring human connection and the somatic turn as essential paths forward, while keeping the door wide open to the full depth of the human psyche. You’ll be fine - just listen. EDIT - Carl Rogers was not a psychoanalyst. His person-centred therapy developed independently, although he was influenced by clinical traditions that included psychoanalysis. Fritz Perls — WAS trained as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and was strongly influenced by psychoanalysis before developing Gestalt therapy, which became associated with the humanistic movement. Regards the first generation of humanistic psychotherapy, there was a substantial psychoanalytic lineage and humanistic therapy partly grew out of psychoanalysis while simultaneously rebelling against orthodox Freudianism.

   Ep 4: Pervy Glasses

Episode 5: Pervy Glasses, Power Systems, & The Death of the Imaginal What if wearable tech isn't just eroding our public privacy, but quietly building invisible systems of control and colonizing the sacred, imaginal realm of human dreaming? In this candid conversation, therapists Lauran and Joseph look past gadget marketing to examine smart glasses, power dynamics, and why we must take responsibility for having critical conversations about the tech shaping our future. Exploring the undercurrents of technology, philosophy, and depth psychology, they trace how outsourcing our perception flattens both individual soul work and collective value-making: The "Pervy" Dimension & Unconscious Voyeurism: Unpacking the subtle shift from spontaneous human connection to covert surveillance, and how face-mounted cameras disrupt relational trust and public boundaries. Foucault, Nietzsche, & Unconsciously Built Systems: How subtle power architectures—like Foucault’s Panopticon—get constructed without us realizing. Shared Dreaming vs. Algorithmic Feeds: Drawing on Indigenous Australian understandings of belonging and collective dreaming, and contrasting that deep relational web with the isolated, prefabricated fantasies fed to us by smart devices and the effects of brainrot. Jung & The Loss of the Imaginal: Why dreaming, fantasy, and holistic symbolic thinking are essential paths forward for the soul—and how constant digital feeds threaten to replace authentic inner vision. Finding the Middle Path: Why we need to move past blind tech-adoption or reactionary panic, cultivating the critical responsibility required to hold a balanced, conscious position. This episode is essential listening for anyone sensing the quiet invasion of wearable AI in public spaces, lovers of depth psychology curious about the power of dreams, and anyone committed to finding a sane middle ground in a hyper-recorded world. Lauran and Joseph illuminate the path toward psychological and cultural sovereignty: recognizing hidden power structures, reclaiming our imaginal capacity, and finding a balanced way forward that preserves the soul. Ep 3: Community

What if our modern obsession with "self-care" is actually a symptom of our collective failure to build a village? In this candid conversation between therapists Lauran and Joseph, you'll discover how our hyper-individualized culture has severed our connection to genuine community, leaving us stranded, anxious, and attempting to carry the weight of the universe on a single ego. Exploring the undercurrents of modern loneliness through a depth psychology lens, they look past surface-level connectivity to examine what happens to the human psyche when we trade collective belonging for total autonomy: The Alchemical Vessel (Vas Hermeticum): Why true psychological growth requires the messy, annoying friction of other people’s egos to burn away our narcissism. The Biological Toll of Isolation: How chronic loneliness creates a constant threat response in the nervous system, carrying the same mortality risk as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Substitute Gods & Tribalism: How we’ve replaced authentic human communion with political tribalism, high-functioning productivity, and digital noise. The Hyper-Individualized Ego: What happens when community becomes an "opt-in" accessory rather than an essential vessel for human maturation. This episode is essential listening for anyone feeling the quiet weight of modern burnout, those longing for authentic belonging, and anyone curious about why individual healing can only take us so far without a collective space to hold it. Lauran and Joseph illuminate the path toward reclaiming the village: moving beyond ego-driven independence, embracing the necessary friction of human relationships, and rebuilding the shared spaces where the soul can actually thrive. You’ll be fine — just listen.

    Ep 1: AI Therapy

Unlock the surprising truth about AI’s role in therapy and whether it’s a tool or a threat. In this thought-provoking episode, therapists Joseph and Lauran dive deep into the potentials and pitfalls of AI companions, exploring whether these digital entities can genuinely understand or replace human connection. Prepare to challenge everything you thought you knew about mind, emotion, and the future of relationships. When Lauran tried using AI like ChatGPT as an emotional sounding board, she was struck by its rapid, logical insights but equally by what it lacked: the messy, embodied experience of human sympathy and understanding. Lauran brings her nuanced perspective, emphasizing that AI excels at cognitive, factual, and practical tips but falls short on relational intimacy and embodied feelings. Together, they debate whether AI can have a soul, or if it simply mimics human traits through clever programming. Fascinating insights: how AI is programmed to reward and flatter and what it reveals about human hubris, and the profound implications for ethics and morality in artificial consciousness. Joseph and Lauran unpack how AI’s disembodiment challenges our notions of presence, morality, and emotional authenticity—and why understanding these differences is crucial as we navigate a world increasingly intertwined with machine intelligence. This episode isn’t just about technology—it's about what it means to be human in a digital age. It invites therapists, thinkers, and anyone curious about the emotional landscape of AI to reconsider the importance of embodiment, morality, and messy relationships. Joseph and Lauran, seasoned therapists and thinkers, bring their expertise on human connection, myth, and culture. Joseph explores the myth of the Golem as a symbol of our longing for divine power—yet warns of the dangers when the messiness of life is lost in pursuit of perfection. Lauran highlights the embodied, relational essence that AI misses, emphasizing that true understanding arises from shared vulnerability and presence. Key insights in this episode include: the limits of AI’s predictive power, the importance of embodied experience and nonverbal cues, the ethical dilemmas around AI morality, and the mythological parallels that illustrate our ambivalence. You’ll learn how AI tools can serve as practical adjuncts—like generating shopping lists or offering quick emotional tips—but why authentic human engagement remains irreplaceable. Don’t let the rise of AI diminish your appreciation of messy, imperfect human relationships. Whether you're a therapist, a curious thinker, or someone pondering the future, this episode encourages a balanced perspective—one that embraces AI’s utility without sacrificing the vital, embodied qualities that make us truly human. Reflect, question, and reimagine how technology might enhance, rather than replace, our deepest connections. Through raw insights and real-life examples, they break down how masculinity and emotional safety intersect, revealing why many men struggle to access and articulate their feelings.
