Spotlight on the Acute Hepatic Porphyria's - Raising Awareness
<p>As part of the Awakend Podcasts, our aim as Behind the Embrace show is not only to cover natural and organic beauty products, aromatherapy and essential oils but to educate and highlight the disease which is termed a rare disease called the Acute Hepatic Porphyrias. This is a metabolic disease, affecting nearly every system in the body. It mimics symptoms of several other conditions and is more than often misdiagnosed. There are still doctors and nurses who are unaware of what Porphyria entails, having only briefly covered it whilst doing their medical training. </p> <p>The fact that today most of the research into management on a day to day basis of the disease comes from those of us who have the condition. The sad reality is that people are suffering untold pain where the level of pain rating between 0-10 is over a 10 and so many are still denied treatment or pain relief. That this is happening in the year 2021 is totally beyond comprehension. I have Variegate Porphyria, one of the Acute Hepatic Porphyrias, our goal this year is to drive this message home so that the medical fraternity, carers, family and friends can be given insight to a day in our life. Our message in particular to the medical fraternity is to treat us with dignity, dont dismiss us, we know our bodies better than anyone else, listen to us and treat us with compassion.</p>
