My name is Tara and my best friend, Theo and I, get together every week on our podcast and discuss issues, ideas, things that are on our minds… including getting old…
If you’re like me, I am not looking forward to being an older person, but we don’t really have any choice in the matter. But it does really suck. Watching the changes that have taken place over the years and seeing what is going on now just makes me shake my head in disbelief.
I was raised by parents that believed that you should be prepared for anything and you should also know how to farm, garden, hunt and also many other life skills that are, unfortunately, not taught to a lot of kids today.
Fast forward to when I turned 40. I had three kids, was separated, living in Florida, away from all of my family, except my kids, who were only 11 and 7 at the time. I got Guillain-Barre Syndrome or GBS and I spent 8 months in a coma and then I was sent to a nursing home. I was living in a nursing home and getting visits from my oldest daughter who stayed with several people to stay by me, but my twins were too young to decide and were five hours away from me.
I was very depressed and lonely, missed my kids terribly and only had what friends I had made in the nursing home with the staff and other residents. I tried my best to keep myself busy by getting involved with activities and I was voted the president of the resident council because I saw things that I believed needed to be changed.
Being that I was in a nursing home, you can imagine the food wasn't always the greatest, so I would order out and one of my favorite places to order from was Domino's Pizza. Of course I would have to get the food delivered, because, wheelchair!!
It was on one of these fateful deliveries that I met, who is now my best friend, Theo. Theo was delivering my Domino's Pizza order to the nursing home that I was living in at the time. As I continued to order, over time, we got to talking about different things and I realized that he was an entrepreneur and a family man and that he wanted to branch out and find a way to make a better living for him and his family. I worked on several of his projects with him when he asked for my help and now, when I needed help, I called on him. So, we decided to team up and we formed It Sucks To Get Old.
Now that we are getting older, our kids are older and we are finding ourselves in the unique position of having time on our hands. Time that is not welcome always. Because we all know that with time comes overthinking and overthinking can cause problems and anxiety.
So we decided to create this space for others like us. Here we can come to get information, watch videos, rant, post your own videos, comments, pictures, etc. about being or getting older.
