<p>Alla fondazione della Certosa contribuirono i monaci Basiliani, come testimoniano la Chiesa di San Nicola alle Donne e i ruderi dell’antico Monastero di San Nicola al Torone. Nel 1296 Tommaso II Sanseverino, conte di Marsico e signore del Vallo di Diano, entrò in possesso della città e donò ai Certosini di San Brunone la Grancia di San Lorenzo dell’abate di Montevergine, nel 1306 incominciava a sorgere il primo nucleo della Certosa, che nei secoli assunse le grandiose dimensioni odierne. Nel 1998 la Certosa è stata dichiarata dall’UNESCO Patrimonio dell’Umanità, nel 2002 inserita dalla Regione Campania nel novero dei Grandi Attrattori Culturali. Tali riconoscimenti hanno determinato un nuovo orientamento verso una politica culturale che l’ha trasformata in un polo di eccellenza, sede di manifestazioni, convegni ed iniziative di rilevanza internazionale.</p>
