Episode 023 | The Benefit of Writing

One day, amid my usual tech-filled routine, I decided to do something different. I picked up a pen, pulled a piece of paper, and started writing a letter. Not just any letter, a letter of gratitude. A letter that acknowledged someone's hard work, their kindness, their impact on my life. Writing a letter by hand is unlike typing an email or text. It's slower, more deliberate, more... intentional. You have to think about each word, each sentence, each paragraph. You must connect with your emotions, reflect on your experiences, and express your thoughts clearly and sincerely. There is no backspace. And here's where the magic happens. As you write, you see your life in a new light. You start to appreciate the people around you, your situations, and the world you're part of. You begin to realize that your life is not just a series of random events but a meaningful narrative you're actively shaping. "To experience meaning, you have to accept the fact of your agency and move into your life with intention." - Donald Miller. By writing these letters, I've expressed my gratitude to others and discovered a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment. I've realized that I'm not just a passive observer but an active participant. And that is a game-changer. This little exercise has brought my focus to the people who matter. Perhaps that is what is missing in society today. We need more reasons to tune into others in real life. Not YouTube or TikTok. Genuine connection begins when we take the time to acknowledge the actions of others. So, here's my challenge: pick up a pen, grab a piece of paper, and write a letter of gratitude. It could be to a friend, a colleague, a family member, or even yourself. Take your time, be sincere, and let your thoughts flow.

Episode 022 | Influence is Reciprocal

Influence is reciprocal. It is easy to say we are the sum of the five people we spend most of our time with. We tend to adopt their habits, preferences, and speech patterns. But we often overlook the fact that our actions can have a significant impact on those around us. Humans are highly social creatures, and our interactions with others shape who we are. Whether through direct communication or simply observing someone's behavior, others constantly influence us. And in turn, we can affect those around us as well. Have you ever paused to ponder upon the roots of this phenomenon? Why are we so inextricably tied to one another, shaping and being shaped in return? It's a testament to our shared humanity. We mirror and echo each other in a perpetual exchange of thoughts, actions, and emotions. It is not simply about mimicry, nor is it a matter of survival. It's about connection. It's about belonging. It's about understanding that we are not solitary but part of a larger tapestry that weaves us all together. Leadership, in its essence, is not about power, control, or the capacity to command. It is about understanding the connection that binds us all together. It is about recognizing the patterns of our shared existence and echoing those patterns in our actions. When we acknowledge this interconnectedness, leadership becomes a mission of influence, shared ideas, actions, and emotions. It is about both influencing and being influenced, leading and being led. In this dance, we find the core of leadership: the realization that we are all, inevitably and beautifully, interconnected. Leadership is not a cryptic riddle to be solved nor a lofty concept that remains out of reach. It is about human connection. When sharing a vision, introducing a new product, outlining a plan of action, or delegating an executable task, the key ingredient remains the same: relationship. It is the bridge that connects the leader with those they lead and the conduit through which influence flows. With it, tasks are complete, visions blurred, and plans merely theoretical. The bond between a leader and their team is the lifeblood that infuses the body of work with meaning, purpose, and life. This need to belong is the spark that ignited the cycle of influence that we engage in today. This basic human desire, this instinctive longing for acceptance and connection, has led us to form bonds, communities, and tribes. These tribes have evolved from simple groups centered around survival to complex networks of individuals bound by common goals, shared values, and mutual respect. And it is within these modern tribes that leadership, as we know it today, takes root. Leaders are not solitary figures standing atop a tower; they are an integral part of the tribe, bound by the same sense of belonging that holds the group together. They influence and are influenced, lead and are led, shaping and being shaped by the tribe. This cyclical nature of influence, this reciprocation of leadership, is a testament to our shared humanity and interconnectedness. It is the backbone of leadership today. This is the culture we create in our work lives. A culture of belonging, shared goals, and mutual respect. And it is within this culture that authentic leadership thrives. So, as you strive to become a better leader, remember all individuals' power of influence and interconnectedness. Use your voice, actions, and emotions to create a positive ripple effect.

Episode 021 | Building Character

How does one build character? Few of us have ever indeed been intentional in presenting ourselves with actions that build our character. Feats that test our mettle. We may be placed in situations that reveal our character to the world, but we rarely attempt to improve upon it. It is almost as if we accept and settle with ourselves. But what if there were something more? Actual character building is not a sporadic showing of virtues but a steady living out of the virtues we deem essential. And that requires defining what is important. We must first understand what values and virtues are essential to build our character. This requires self-reflection and introspection. This is a step that Carl Jung, in the deep work method, calls "shadow work." It is exploring our deepest fears, insecurities, and negative aspects of ourselves to understand better who we are. Only by knowing what areas need improvement can we actively work towards building our character. Once we have identified our values and virtues, we must actively practice them daily. This means making conscious decisions and taking intentional actions that align with our beliefs and values. It also involves consistent actions, even when faced with difficulties or challenges. Building character is a learning process. Like all learning processes, there must be an assessment. It is in putting the needs of others before our own that we cultivate empathy, compassion, and kindness. These traits are essential in building strong character, allowing us to understand better and connect with those around us. Character comes with expanding our worldview. It comes with intentionally placing ourselves in other people's shoes and living not through them but for them. It comes with being open-minded and accepting of different perspectives and beliefs. Another critical aspect of building character is through self-discipline. This involves setting high standards for ourselves and holding ourselves accountable to them. It means having the willpower to resist temptations that go against our values and virtues, even when they may be tempting. Character comes from suffering. It is through facing challenges, struggles, and adversity that our character is truly tested and strengthened. As Helen Keller mentioned in the quote above, it is during these difficult times that we have the opportunity to grow and develop our character. When was the last time you put yourself in an uncomfortable position? Our character is built upon the needs of discomfort. We grow as individuals by stepping out of our comfort zone, facing our fears, and pushing ourselves to do things we never thought possible. It is built by volunteering abroad, giving your time, and giving yourself. In a modern culture that rewards comfort, stability, and selfishness, continuing our quest to build character becomes more critical.
