Menslink Midweekers

About Menslink Midweekers

Menslink Midweekers are all about discussing the issues facing young guys in the community. Each Midweeker brings together people from all corners of the community: business owners, sportspeople, politicians, community leaders, and community, to share stories and how they’ve been supported throughout their life. Every Midweeker features a well-known Canberran talking about their life’s journey and the challenges they have overcome to get where they are today. Midweekers are a great way to hear inspiring stories from Canberran leaders, learn a bit about Menslink and our great work, and meet old and new friends in a friendly setting. Menslink Midweekers are proudly supported by Lennock Volkswagen (https://www.lennockvolkswagen.com.au/) Interested in attending a Midweeker? Visit Menslink (https://menslink.org.au/menslink-midweekers/) for more information. A reminder that if you are a young guy, who is looking for some support, you know someone who is, or you are a school, head to Menslink (https://menslink.org.au/menslink-midweekers/) to find out more about how we can help. However, if you need help after hours, get in contact with Lifeline (https://www.lifeline.org.au) on 13 11 14 or visit

Bjarne Kragh - Viking Talks with Mark Wadie - December 2023

This episode is a little different in that we aren’t bringing you our latest Menslink Midweeker speaker. Instead, we are going to share an episode from another podcast, Viking Talks, hosted by Bjarne  Kragh, who is Danish, a true Viking. We are sharing the episode here because, recently, Mark Wadie, Menslink’s Education Program Manager, sat down with Bjarne to discuss the work Menslink does for young men in Canberra. It really is a great chat and provides some great insights and stories into our work and the impact it has. In the chat, Bjarne and Mark talk about Menslink’s PRIDE program. Please note that we’ve rebranded our PRIDE program as TRIBE (Trust, Resilience, Independence, Bravery, and Empathy). Plus, we also have a new program for 2024, Unplugged. If you are interested in learning more about TRIBE or Unplugged, please visit www.menslink.org.au (http://www.menslink.org.au) Bjarne's goal with Viking Talks is to increase public knowledge related to wellness so that everyone can live longer and happier lives. The podcast covers some really great topics and we’d encourage you to check it out. You can find it on the Southside Physio website, at southsidephysio.com.au (https://southsidephysio.com.au/resources/podcast/), or search for ‘Viking Talks’ in your favourite podcast app. Please have a listen and support Bjarne’s show, because, not only is it a great initiative, but Bjarne is such an amazing supporter of Menslink and that helps us make an impact in the community. We hope you enjoy the episode as much as we did. Enjoy. 20 Nov 2023

   Wally Rao - November 2023

In this Midweeker, held in November 2023, we heard from Wally Rao from Deakin & Me. Wally is the “accidental mentor” who helps more young people daily than he cares to admit. His booming hello of “Hey champion” is a hallmark of a visit to his cafe, Deakin & Me. Wally’s coffee and cafe journey started with his parents owning and operating one of the original cafes in Petrie Plaza in the mid 60’s called the “chuck wagon”. Wally learned from his immigrant parents the value of hard work and a friendly smile. The big step in Wally’s cafe journey was moving into his own venue starting at the University of Canberra and recently he onward to EQ in Deakin, and is now back in the business at Deakin & Me. (https://www.deakinandme.com.au/) Wally’s personality and kind spirit have enabled him to help many young blokes either in their first job or just a friendly greeting. Enjoy. Francis Owusu - October 2023

In this Midweeker, held in October 2023, we heard from Francis Owusu from Kutlure Break. Francis has used his love of dance to stimulate others to build their confidence and self-belief, as it did for him. A child of Ghanaian parents, Francis grew up in Victoria where he endured racism born of ignorance which almost propelled him towards a life of crime. Moving to Canberra he turned his life around through dance, going on to study finance banking at university by day and exploding on stage by night as a member of the band 925. He has worked with major recording artists Marcia Hines, Jon Stevens, and Guy Sebastian during his career. Driven by a determination to share his good fortune, he organised after-school dance classes for children. And so, over the past decade, Francis and Kulture Break have performed with thousands of children in schools, community centres, and jails, inspiring and motivating them. For Francis, Kulture Break is a reflection of his belief that life is not characterised by what you have received but what you can give. You can find out more about Kulture Break's awesome work at kulturebreak.com (In%20this%20Midweeker,%20held%20in%20October%202023,%20we%20heard%20from%20Francis%20Owusu%20from%20Kutlure%20Break.%20%20Francis%20has%20used%20his%20love%20of%20dance%20to%20stimulate%20others%20to%20build%20their%20confidence%20and%20self-belief,%20as%20it%20did%20for%20him.%20A%20child%20of%20Ghanaian%20parents,%20Francis%20grew%20up%20in%20Victoria%20where%20he%20endured%20racism%20born%20of%20ignorance%20which%20almost%20propelled%20him%20towards%20a%20life%20of%20crime.%20%20%20Moving%20to%20Canberra%20he%20turned%20his%20life%20around%20through%20dance,%20going%20on%20to%20study%20finance%20banking%20at%20university%20by%20day%20and%20exploding%20on%20stage%20by%20night%20as%20a%20member%20of%20the%20band%20925.%20He%20has%20worked%20with%20major%20recording%20artists%20Marcia%20Hines,%20Jon%20Stevens%20and%20Guy%20Sebastian%20during%20his%20career.%20Driven%20by%20a%20determination%20to%20share%20his%20good%20fortune,%20he%20organised%20after-school%20dance%20classes%20for%20children.%20%20And%20so,%20over%20the%20past%20decade,%20Francis%20and%20Kulture%20Break%20have%20performed%20with%20thousands%20of%20children%20in%20schools,%20community%20centres%20and%20jails,%20inspiring%20and%20motivating%20them.%20For%20Francis,%20Kulture%20Break%20is%20a%20reflection%20of%20his%20belief%20that%20life%20is%20not%20characterised%20by%20what%20you%20have%20received%20but%20what%20you%20can%20give.%20%20You%20can%20find%20out%20more%20about%20Kulture%20Break) Enjoy. Michael Coutts-Trotter - Business Breakfast 2023

Michael Coutts-Trotter was our keynote speaker at the 2023 Menslink Business Breakfast. Earlier in 2023, Michael was confirmed as the Secretary of NSW Treasury to the new Chris Minns NSW Government. Michael’s past has been written and spoken about extensively. Arriving from England as a young guy, he lost his father to cancer at a young age. He then fell into the trap of drugs and dealing, which led to a stint in jail and rehab. His self-determination and the support around him led to his famed redemption and a path back into professional life with the NSW Government. Michael’s journey is about resilience, strength, courage, and being given a second chance.
