عندما إلتقيا لأول مرةٍ "نيتشه و فاغنَر"، تشاركا الإعجاب بالتشاؤم الفلسفي للفيلسوف آرثر شوبنهاور، الذي رأى في مشروعه الفلسفي أنَ العالَم يحكمهُ السعي النهم للإرادة، إفترضَ شوبنهاور أنهُ فقط من خلال نبذ الرغبة الدنيوية، يُمكننا تحرير أنفُسنا من دوافعنا المُستمرة الجَشِعة، كما إنَ التجربة الجمالية هي أحدى السُبل للتغلب على الذات، وهي فكرة ألهَمت نيتشه المحاط بالفن في كتاباتهِ، لكنهُ إستَخف بتأكيد شوبنهاور على ممارسة التعاطُف، والتي تَعِدُ أيضاً بالتحرر من الأنا المتشبعة، على النقيض من ذلك، إدعى فاغنر أنهُ يُقدر التعاطف فوق كُل المشاعر الأُخرى، "بارسيفال - Parsifal"، أوبراه الأخيرة، لها شعارها "Durch Mitleid wissend، der reine Tor - الطاهر المُغَفل، عارفُ الشَفقة"، في كتاب نيتشه المنشور عام 1878، "إنسان مفرطٌ في إنسانيتهِ"، أعلَن فيهِ هجومه الإفتتاحي على فاغنَر والميتافيزيقيا الرومانسية، يدِقُ بعيدًا عن كلمة "Mitleid - بالألمانية تُترجَم تعاطُف"، معتبراً إياها أداةً توهِن الإنسان، في مكانتها يمتدحُ نيتشه الصلابة والقوة والقسوة، يكتب: "إنَ الثقافة برُمتها ببساطة لا تستطيع الإستغناء عن العواطف والرذائل والأفعال الخبيثة"،

كتبَ نيتشه بعُنفوان، ليس هُناكَ من رب ماتَ من أجل خطايانا، ليسَ هُناك خلاص بالإيمان، ولابَعث بعدَ الموت هذهِ هيِّ العُملات المزورة للمسيحية الحَقة وتلكَ الأدمغة التعيسة المُغامرة مسؤولة عن هذا الخداع، الحياة التي يجب أن تتخذ مثلاً يُحتذى قوامها الحُب والتَواضع، وفي فيِّضِ قلبها لاتطردُ أصغر الكائنات، إنها تتخلى، وبشكلٍ حازم، عن المُطالبة بحقها، عن الدفاع عن نفسها، وعن الإنتصار إذا كانَ يعني النصر الشخصي، تؤمن بالغِبطة هنا على الأرض، رغم البؤس والصراع والموت، متسامحةً وترفض الغضب والإحتقار، لاتريد جَزاء، لاتعاهد أيَّ أحد، عفوية في جانبها الأكثر روحانية وفكرية، حياةً فَخورة وتملكُ إرادة الحياة الفقيرة والحقيرة.
