<p>· Latar Belakang Lahirnya VOC</p> <p>Pada abad ke-16, wilayah-wilayah di Belanda berada di bawah kekuasaan Kerajaan Spanyol. Namun Revolusi Belanda atau perang kemerdakaan sejak tahun 1560-an, mendorong Belanda mempunyai jalur perdagangan sendiri.</p> <p>Pada tahun 1598, Belanda melancarkan ekspedisinya untuk mencari 'Kepulauan Rempah-rempah'. Sebanyak empat kapal dengan 249 awak dan 64 pucuk meriam berangkat di bawah pimpinan Cornelis de Houtman. Pada Juni 1596, kapal-kapal de Houtman sampai di Banten, pelabuhan lada terbesar di Jawa Barat. Meski belum menemukan pusat rempah-rempah di timur Nusantara, de Houtman telah mewariskan jalur pelayaran bagi penjelajah Belanda berikutnya. Maka pada tahun berikutnya, Belanda kembali menggelar ekspedisi besar-besaran ke Nusantara</p>
