Tweehonderd jaar geleden werd in Amsterdam Eduard Douwes Dekker geboren, beter bekend onder zijn schrijvers aan Multatuli. Zijn beroemde roman Max Havelaar verscheen 160 jaar geleden. Hoewel, het was eigenlijk nooit als roman bedoeld maar als aanklacht tegen het Nederlands koloniaal bewind in Oost-Indie, het huidige Indonesië. Toen onderukte de Nederlandse koloniale overheid de bevolking. Nu zijn het de multinationals die de plaatselijke bevolking uitbuiten. In deze eerste van 5 afleveringen gaat het over de vraag hoe het kan dat een papieren held na 160 jaar nog steeds mensen inspireert om mensen in actie te komen tegen onrecht, uitbuiting en onderdrukking. In deze aflevering praat voorzitter Roelof Schut van Theatergroep Maskerade Waddinxveen met voorzitter Dirk Lont van de Fairtrade gemeente werkgroep Waddinxveen over de betekenis van de Max Havelaar. Multatuli kenner Chris van der Veen uit Duiven geeft aan wat Multatuli beoogde met de Max Havelaar. En conservator Klaartje Groot laat zien wat er over Multatuli bewaard is in zijn geboortehuis in Amsterdam dat nu het Multatuli huis is.
