ANDREW BAINES | REALITY IS OK FOR A HOLIDAY The Nancy Sever Gallery is delighted to start its 2020 program with an exhibition of recent work by the South Australian artist Andrew Baines. Since 1997 Andrew Baines has dedicated himself to painting and installations and, due to his remarkable artistic talent and his unique approach to his work, he has received international recognition and acclaim. He has created dozens of surreal Installations on Australian beaches via collaborations with, amongst others, the United Nations Association of Australia, the West Australian and Adelaide Symphony orchestras, and hundreds of volunteers. Many of these installations received international media coverage. As the artist explains: “My days are now spent persuading cows to stand in the ocean, or corralling hundreds of suited volunteers wielding umbrellas into surreal installations”. Inspired by these events he creates quasi-surreal paintings that he has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and in Brussels, Hong Kong, London, Manchester, Montreal and several cities in the USA including New York, as well as in Portugal, Scotland, Singapore and Switzerland. When not working on his art, Andrew writes, “the rest of my time is spent in solitude contemplating life’s big questions while wondering want I can use to paint a herd of sheep yellow without poisoning them all”. Art is his escapism, he says. “I am the figure in the sometimes over-populated landscape or the barren beachscape contemplating my existence. My paintings are a metaphor for my life: battling with the urban herds, perusing horizons while seeking autonomy and freedom”.
