Episode 9: Interactions between Law Enforcement and Persons with Mental Illness--Responding Responsibly

In this episode of Neurolawgical, I focus on discussing a research area of interest for me: improving law enforcement's response to people with mental illness. Tiana and I have a dialogue about my thoughts and a paper I wrote on the topic, and the implications and recommendations.

Since 2015, over 1,360 people with a known mental illness have been shot and killed in police-involved shootings (The Washington Post, 2020). Join Tiana and I as we talk about this important issue facing our communities and ways that law enforcement has and can continue to take actions to prevent the negative outcomes. This episode is relevant to anyone in the law enforcement field, criminal justice professionals, mental health advocates and professionals, and students/researchers.

Interested in learning more? I am also going to be doing a live 1-hour talk on it through the 8th Annual Global Well Being and Social Change Conference. Please contact me if you are interested in registering for that conference and/or reading my now PUBLISHED paper.

I always welcome feedback, comments, or questions, so please feel free to reach out to me via email: neurolawgical@gmail.com or through social media on Facebook (Neurolawgical) or Instagram (@neurolawgical_).

Sources:

The Washington Post (2020) https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/investigations/police-shootings-database/

Episode 8: A doggone good episode, and we do it justice!

Today's episode is a little different! Today, Tiana will be sharing about her work regarding dogs being incorporated into courthouses, and Alex (me) will be getting to know more.

This episode is a must for anyone who wants to understand an area of the criminal justice system that may not always be discussed in the media or elsewhere. It's also a must for doglovers! The discussion is relevant to mental health field workers, criminal justice professionals, and researchers or students.

The paper that Tiana wrote and discusses is titled: "Courthouse Facility Dogs: An Intervention for Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence" published in the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health (2020). At the end of this episode, you'll learn more about the publication process from Tiana's perspective.

Tiana also has a blog page titled "Sit, Stay, Blog" where you can learn more and reach out to her with questions.

Please reach out to me via email (neurolawgical@gmail.com) or connect with me on Instagram @neurolawgical_ or on Facebook :D

***Please note*** As of the release of this episode, Jennifer Storm has unfortunately resigned as the Victim Advocate.***

In this episode of Neurolawgical, Tiana and I discuss the role of the Office of the Victim Advocate in general, but more specifically, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Victim Advocate, Jennifer Storm. Tiana and I discuss our thoughts on the matter, and do our own advocating for her to remain in her position.

*Fun update...Tiana did get these books on her "Santa" list which I knew at the time would happen...*

Mentions:

Jennifer Storm

Books by Jennifer Storm:

Blackout Girl

Leave the Light On

Picking up the Pieces without Picking Up

Blackout Girl (with updated content from the Me Too movement)

Awakening Blackout Girl
