<p>In dit gesprek spreken Erik Dijkstra en Guus Dubbelman over hun boek Ali was mijn vriend.</p> <p>In 1976 ontmoet de dan 18-jarige Nederlandse scholier Guus Dubbelman zijn grote held Muhammad Ali. Ze raken bevriend. Door de jaren heen volgt een handvol ontmoetingen waarbij Guus verandert van een schuchtere jongen in een professionele fotograaf. Ze praten over alles wat hen bezighoudt. De avonturen die ze samen beleven zijn afwisselend opmerkelijk en ontroerend en soms tamelijk bizar. Ze praten over de problemen die zwarte Amerikanen ondervinden, maar ook over de eerste pornofilms. Over boksen en over tanende glorie. Soms zien ze elkaar heel even, soms dagen achtereen. Maar altijd is er verbondenheid. In elkaar herkennen ze de worsteling die het leven nou eenmaal vaak is. Door de ziekte van Parkinson takelt Muhammad Ali zowel lichamelijk als geestelijk steeds verder af. Guus dringt zich nooit op, maar blijft zijn held wel altijd trouw. Ali laat hem op zijn beurt steeds dichterbij komen. Omdat ze vrienden zijn.</p>
