La estatua de sal - Relato de Leopoldo Lugones
En «La estatua de sal» de Lugones, el monje Sosistrato, penitente a la sazón, recibe en el desierto la visita del diablo disfrazado de peregrino, quien le incita a liberar a la esposa de Lot, convertida en estatua de sal según el conocido pasaje bíblico. El monje cometerá la misma culpa que tantos héroes románticos desde Fausto: el deseo de conocer. Preguntará a la estatua recién liberada de su castigo qué vio al volver el rostro el día de la destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra; pregunta que supone un castigo tal que Sosistrato retrocederá en el tiempo hasta convertirse en «actor de la catástrofe». Hay, por tanto, un deseo explícito en el narrador de cuentos fantásticos de confundir en el relato realidad y ficción. Lugones ha tomado un suceso que en el seno de nuestra cultura tiene aceptada credibilidad (indudablemente que el cuento fantástico cuenta en muchas ocasiones con la aquiesciencia de la colectividad: religión, supersticiones, creencias populares, leyendas, etc.). Ha roto la sucesión temporal al final del relato. El tiempo es ahora circular, pues Sosístrato vivirá indefinidamente el infierno de la destrucción bíblica y el acto culpable de la pregunta .
