Frank Lucas é a personagem entre os sujeitos das dramatis personae, em Americam Gangster, cuja anatomia biográfica me interessa bastante, e por um motivo em especial: ele é um sujeito caracteristicamente observador, e é da observação mesmo que eu queria tratar já não é de hoje. Eu poderia escolher uma personagem guia tipo um Sherlock Holmes pra escrever sobre o tema da observação, mas eu não quero. A nossa personagem será mesmo um mafioso narcotraficante de Nova York na década de setenta, célebre por utilizar os aviões do Exército dos EUA como meio de trazer suas drogas da Tailândia — que vinham junto aos caixões dos mortos em batalha na guerra do Vietnã —, para com isso vendê-las mais puras e mais baratas que as difundidas pelos seus concorrentes no Harlem, de modo a formar durante meia década o monopólio de venda da heroína mais zero-zero-zero do país. Frank é um exímio observador. E sua aspiração para ser um homem de negócios, em toda a narrativa da trama em American Gangster, me parece ser ressaltada pela ênfase nessa sua característica. Ele está o tempo inteiro observando as coisas. E há um fundo de razão nisso.
