Nathan searching for redemption

What happens when a kid you sat next to in junior high school grows up to face a first-degree murder charge by the age of 18?

In this heavy, unfiltered episode, we sit down with my former classmate, Nathan Hicks, for a deeply personal dive into a life defined by extreme highs, devastating lows, and the harsh realities of the streets. We pull back the curtain on a journey that spiraled from normal teenage school days into active Blood gang membership, severe addiction, and the absolute worst-case scenario: being wrongfully accused of taking a human life.

The Charge That Changed Everything

At just 18 years old, Nathan found his name permanently tied to a nightmare when he was arrested and charged with the murder of Donald Dobson (Rest in Peace). In this episode, Nathan walks us through the terrifying reality of staring down a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. We discuss the street politics, the investigation, and the overwhelming relief—yet lasting trauma—of having those murder charges completely dropped when the truth finally surfaced.

Gangs, Prison, and the Price of Addiction

But the dropped charges weren’t the end of the chaos. Nathan opens up about the lifestyle that led him to the edge: his time as an active Blood gang member and the street mentality that eventually landed him behind bars for aggravated burglary. He doesn’t hold back about his cycle of being in and out of the prison system, shedding light on what it really takes to survive on the inside—and how brutal it is to break the cycle on the outside.

Burning Bridges and the Lifestyle

This isn’t just a story about the legal system; it’s a story about personal destruction. Nathan candidly addresses the darker sides of his character and habits. We talk about his past as a womanizer, using toxic relationship patterns as a distraction from the growing void inside. More painfully, Nathan confronts the wreckage left behind by his severe addiction—admitting how his dependency caused him to completely alienate, hurt, and burn bridges with the family who cared about him most.

This is an explicit, no-holds-barred conversation between two people who shared a childhood but walked completely different paths. It’s a story of survival, street reality, wrongful accusations, and the ongoing fight to reclaim a life from the jaws of addiction and prison.

Tune in for a raw look at a life pushed to the absolute brink.

Hosted on Acast. Anaststia: The Pain she never said out loud
This episode of The Otherside dives into a life that never had a chance to be normal. Our guest took her first hit at six years old — weed and cigarettes before she even learned multiplication. By seventeen she was drinking daily, pulled into a generational storm of addiction, violence, and survival. Her family tree is soaked in trauma: drug use, prison sentences, and a brother serving time for murder. Her path crashed into meth, crime, and eventually prison. When she got out, she tried to outsmart the system by switching to bath salts — a way to stay “clean” on tests long enough to get off parole. It worked… until it didn’t. Relapse hit hard. New charges. Probation. And then the big one: a cathinone lab case, accused of manufacturing bath salts while still on paper. Now she’s fighting for her freedom again. But this isn’t just a downfall story — it’s a war story. She’s been in UHRC for a year, showing up every day, clawing her way toward a life she’s never seen modeled. She’s applying for peer support, taking classes, trying to turn her scars into something that saves someone else. This conversation is raw and unfiltered — childhood stolen by addiction, the reality of prison, the pull of relapse, and the brutal fight to break generational cycles that feel unbreakable. It’s messy. It’s honest. It’s survival in its most human form.Welcome to The Otherside — where we tell the stories of the lives we lived, the lives we lost, and the lives we’re still trying to build.

Hosted on Acast.
