The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams (2017)

From The Nature Fix:

- shinrin yoku ("forest bathing”) is a popular practice in Japan that is based on a ancient Shinto and Buddhist practices. The practice is quite simple: let nature into your body through all five senses. As of the writing of The Nature Fix, there were 48 official “Forest Therapy” trails designated for shinrin yoku in Japan; goal is to establish 100 such trails within 10 years (2027). Fun fact: A small number of physicians are certified in forest medicine in Japan.

- Lïsa Tyrväinen, a former ecologist who obtained a PhD in economics, runs the research division at the National Resources Institute of Finland. Her division oversaw a study that asked 3,000 city dwellers about emotional and restorative experiences in nature. Key finding: the biggest boost was experienced after city dwellers spent 5 or more hours per months in natural settings. This equates to 30 minutes per day, 2 or 3 times per week. A bigger boost is achieved when you spend 10 or more hours per month in natural settings.

City Parks: a stroll around the world’s most beautiful public spaces by Christopher Beanland (2023)

Trust for Public Land compiles data on parks in the nation’s 100 largest cities. TPL established ParkScore to measure the quality of city park systems across the nation’s largest cities; rankings go back to 2012. ParkScore data reports are available here. To determine a city’s ParkScore, TPL assigns points for 14 measures across five categories: acreage, investment, amenities, access, and equity.
