<h2>Police Use of Force</h2> <p>In this inaugural episode of Healthy City Healthy Nation, we discuss one of the most pressing issues facing our nation: police use of deadly force.</p> <h4><strong>Episode Overview</strong>:</h4> <p>In the wake of George Floyd’s homicide in Minneapolis, protests have erupted across the nation. &nbsp;In today’s episode, we examine the many challenges and complexities surrounding police use of deadly force through three specific policing issues that we faced during my time as mayor.</p> <p>While federal and state officials debate reforms, my core philosophy, which underscores this Healthy City - Healthy Nation podcast, is that local elected officials and local citizens must own the responsibility for public safety and police department management. This podcast discussion underscores that this concept is far from a given. The question of who really owns responsibility for local public safety efforts and local law enforcement management is a topic that deserves significant discussion.</p> <p>My guests on the show are Chet Epperson, former City of Rockford Chief of Police, and K. Edward Copeland, Pastor of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. &nbsp;Chief Epperson, Pastor Copeland and I worked closely together on public safety and law enforcement issues during my time as mayor.
