En cada país hay un organismo que controla este deporte, normalmente cada país esta afiliado a una o varias de las asociaciones internacionales que reconocen los combates por el título mundial. Hay multitud de títulos mundiales o continentales sancionados por diversas siglas que aparecen y desaparecen continuamente de muy poco prestigio internacional, los organismos realmente importantes son (CMB, AMB, FIB y OMB), su denominación en inglés (WBC, WBA, IBF y WBO). AMB – WBA : Asociación Mundial de Boxeo, fundada en 1962. Presidente el venezolano Gilberto Jesús Mendoza. CMB – WBC: Consejo Mundial de Boxeo, fundada en 1963.
