西拉德(Leó Szilárd)於1898年出生於布達佩斯。1916 他贏得 厄特沃什(Eötvös) 獎，這是個匈牙利全國的數學大獎。沒多久他進入大學，隔年他被徵召入伍，在上前線前染上西班牙流感，在家療養。結果逃過一劫。

克里斯蒂安．海更斯是數學家更是物理學家。1629年4月14日出生在海牙。海更斯出身世家，他的的父親康斯坦丁·海更斯（Constantijn Huygens，1596-1687）活躍於新成立的尼德蘭共和國的政壇，同時也是大哲學家笛卡兒的朋友。克里斯蒂安．海更斯幼年跟隨父親以及家庭教師學習，據說笛卡兒對小海更斯的數學天賦稱讚不已。 1659年左右開始研究等時降線曲線、1655年海更斯首次提出主張土星被一個堅硬而且又薄又扁，向黃道傾斜的環所圍住。1659年海更斯利用自己磨製的望遠鏡，確定了土星光環的存在。

公元1040年，一個新的突厥部族，逐漸成為伊斯蘭中土的霸主。史稱塞爾柱帝國(Seljuk Empire)。在第三任蘇丹馬立克沙一世(Malik-Shah I)治下，塞爾柱帝國國勢達到頂峰，而當時最偉大的學者奧瑪．開儼(Omar Khayyam 1048-1131)就是任職於馬立克沙一世的宮廷中。馬立克沙一世非常器重奧瑪．開儼，委以他改革曆法的重任，1079年所實行的新曆亞拉里曆(Jalali calendar)就是包含他在內八名天文學家的心血結晶。而他關於三次方程式的著作更是數學史上重要的里程碑。
