坚持自我，修养自己（1）
<p>我们还应该检查一下自我修养的情况。正是由于缺乏自我修养，所以人们便疯狂地迷信旅游，把意大利、英国、埃及奉若神明。直到现在为止，所有受过教育的美国人仍然对旅游趋之若鹜。就是这些人，使英国、意大利或者希腊，在人们的想象中变得巍然高大，令人肃然起敬，但他们自己，却像一根地轴，永远固守在原地不动。在我们进行决断的时候，我们感到职责就在我们的岗位上。灵魂决不是一个东游西荡的旅游爱好者。智者总是足不出户，如果有必要、有义务，叫他在什么场合离开他的住所，或者到外国去，他也毫无怨言，但他好像仍然待在自己的家里，而且还用他的面部表情使人们意识到，他是在传播智慧和美德，像一位君王一样访问一个个城市和人物，而不是像一个得过且过的商贩或仆从。<br /></p><p>请注意，我并没有武断地反对为了艺术、为了研究和慈善目的的环球旅行，只要人首先喜欢家居，并不指望通过旅游获得比他已掌握的知识更高超的知识而出国，那请他随便好了。可是，如果谁为了取乐，为了获得他手里没有的东西而旅游，那么，谁就在做脱离自身的旅行，而使自己混迹于老古董之中，即便是青 春年少的好韶光，也很快就会腐朽老去。在底比斯，在帕尔米拉，他的意志和心灵，已经变得像那些城市一样，古老而坍塌。他把废墟带进了废墟。<br /></p><span><br /></span>

对于一切事物，如实观照领略（4）
<p>艺术的生活，原是观照享乐的生活，在这一点上，艺术和宗教实有同一的归趋。凡为实利或成见所缚，不能把日常生活咀嚼玩味的，都是与艺术无缘的人们。真的艺术，不限在诗里，也不限在画里，到处都有，随时可得。能把他捕捉了用文字来表现的是诗人，用形及五彩表现的是画家。不会作诗，不会作画，也不要紧，只要对于日常生活有观照玩味的能力，无论谁何，都能有权去享受艺术之神的恩宠。否则虽自号为诗人画家，仍是俗物。<br /></p><p>与和尚数日相聚，深深地感到这点。自怜囫囵吞枣地过了大半生，平日吃饭着衣，何曾尝到过真的滋味！乘船坐车，看山行路，何曾领略到真的情景！虽然愿从今留意，但是去日苦多，又因自幼未曾经过好好的艺术教养，即使自己有这个心，又何尝有十分把握！言之怃然！<br /></p><span><br /></span>

对于一切事物，如实观照领略（3）
<p>第二日，有另一位朋友送了四样菜来斋他，我也同席。其中有一碗咸得非常的，我说：“这太咸了！”<br /></p><p>“好的！咸也有咸的滋味，也好的！”<br /></p><p>我家和他寄寓的春社相隔有一段路，第三日，他说饭不必送去，可以自己来吃，且笑说乞食是出家人的本分等的话。<br /></p><p>“那么逢天雨仍替你送去罢！”<br /></p><p>“不要紧！天雨，我有木屐哩！”他说出木屐二字时，神情上竟俨然是一种了不得的法宝。我总还有些不安。他又说：<br /></p><p>“每日走些路，也是一种很好的运动。”我也就无法反对了。在他，世间竟没有不好的东西，一切都好，小旅馆好，统舱好，挂褡好，粉破的席子好，破旧的手巾好，白菜好，莱菔好，咸苦的蔬菜好，跑路好，什么都有味，什么都了不得。<br /></p><p>这是何等的风光啊！宗教上的话且不说，琐屑的日常生活到此境界，不是所谓生活的艺术化了吗？人家说他在受苦，我却要说他是享乐。当我见他吃莱菔白菜时那种愉悦叮咛的光景，我想：莱菔白菜的全滋味、真滋味，怕要算他才能如实尝得的了。对于一切事物，不为因袭的成见所缚，都还他一个本来面目，如实观照领略，这才是真解脱、真享乐。<br /></p><span><br /></span>
