In this episode, we delve into the intersection of surveillance capitalism and communication theory.

We explore Shoshana Zuboff's definition of surveillance capitalism, which seeks total certainty through data modeling and behavioral prediction. Using symbolic interactionism, I examine how fear and the desire for control drive our responses in an uncertain world. I also bring in philosopher Byung Chul Han's concept of the 'digital panopticon' and its impact on trust and transparency, leading to spiritual burnout.

My hope is that this sparks our imagination for a shift from fear to curiosity, emphasizing the importance of trust and connection in transforming our collective experience.

What else?

* Looking for more resources to help with your personal formation journey?
In our first episode of what we hope becomes a monthly discussion, my friend Rachel and I introduce The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. We dig into the first two chapters, discussing Zuboff's definitions of surveillance capitalism, its implications on privacy, data collection, and the future, and key themes such as the asymmetry of power and the ethics of data collection. We especially talk about how surveillance capitalism intersects with our daily lives, and how it affects the life of the church in the Western world.

And because it’s us, and we are chaotic, eclectic and voracious readers, we share what we’ve been reading and plan to read next, covering everything from fantasy romances to socioeconomic theories and Christian theology.

* You can learn more about my work on the About page.

* Have a question? Ask me anything.

This is a public episode.
