Po krátkém angažmá v činoherním souboru Divadla Josefa Kajetána Tyla v Plzni se stal členem hereckého souboru Činoherního studia, kde poté zastával pozici uměleckého šéfa. Pokud jde o televizi, upozornil na sebe Jan Plouhar především ve filmu Zatracení, v němž hrál českého překupníka drog v thajském vězení. </p>
