Otto Bauer war Vorsitzender der österreichischen Sozialdemokratie und hat Wesentliches und Bleibendes zu Fragen von Militarisierung, Inflation und Imperialismus, zu Nation, Migration und Rassismus geschrieben. In der Riege der klassischen Marxisten hat Otto Bauer eine der systematischsten Strategien für den Aufbau einer Gemeinwirtschaft in allen gesellschaftlichen Sektoren (Banken, Industrie, Landwirtschaft, Wohnen und Stadtpolitik usw.) vorgelegt. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt hier auf der Vergesellschaftung (anstatt Verstaatlichung). Bis heute aktuell sind Bauers Überlegungen, wie es gelingen kann, die Sozialisierung auf der Grundlage von Entschädigungen durchzuführen und gleichzeitig die kapitalistische Klasse selbst bezahlen zu lassen.
