Welcome to Safety First! The Doorzaam Podcast about safety for and by temporary workers in the manufacturing and process industry. In this series we dive into a topic that is literally a matter of life and death: working safely. Whether you're on a construction site, working in a factory, or operating machinery: more accidents still happen than necessary. For temporary workers, that's often extra challenging: you keep entering new work environments, getting to know new colleagues, and need to switch gears quickly.
So how do you stay firmly grounded? And what should you pay attention to, not just for your own safety, but also that of your colleagues? In Safety First we talk with temporary workers and share real-life stories about what's going well, and what could be better. Tune in and make sure you get home safely every day...!
On paper, everything checked out. The handover note said just one line: "Line's clear, good to run." The lead operator confirmed it, and Amir could simply start his shift. Yet after a few minutes he walked back to the line and found that one of the readings was off. A small gut feeling that most people would brush aside on a busy day. Not Amir. And in a plant working with chemical raw materials, a feeling like that can be the difference between an ordinary shift and something that turns very expensive and very dangerous. What he discovered when he checked that line again, he tells himself. Along with why he's never blindly trusted what's on paper since. Would you have walked back?

#9 - Physical limitations
You lift something that's actually too heavy. But you feel strong, you've been doing this for years. So you bend, you twist, and you don't even think about it, until your body suddenly says "no." Mateo saw it happen up close. A colleague wanted to loosen a thirty-kilo part "real quick," threw out his back, and ended up home for three weeks. Why do we take those risks, especially once we know the work inside out? And why does asking for help actually take more strength than doing it alone?

#8 - There's no such thing as a stupid question
It's your first day in a new factory. Signs are around you everywhere, everyone knows their way around, and you're the only one who still has to learn it all. You hesitate: am I actually allowed to drive here? But you don't ask. Because, what if they think you don't have a clue?
Rob knows exactly how that feels. On his very first day, he drove just a little too far into the wrong zone… and was called back straight away.
Why do we find it so hard to just ask a question? And why might that very question be the most important tool you have on the factory floor?

#7 - Language buddies
What happens when you almost (but not quite) understand each other, surrounded by machines, signals and safety rules?
In this episode we speak with Sanne. She talks about the moments where language unexpectedly gets in the way. Colleagues who switch to Frisian as soon as someone else joins. A misunderstanding about "kooi fiif" or tank four, and a shout across the brining room that she had no idea how to interpret, until a colleague explained that shouting means "stop". We talk about how non-verbal communication is sometimes clearer than words, and why it's harder to ask follow-up questions in a group than one-on-one.

#6 - Cultural differences
How do you work safely together when your shift consists of colleagues from all kinds of countries, each with their own work habits and ways of communicating?
In this episode we speak with Joey. He's second-in-command at a factory with large silos and mixing tanks, and works daily with colleagues from Poland, Hungary, Nigeria and beyond. Joey speaks openly about a moment that nearly went wrong: a colleague who tried to put his hand into a mixer that was still running, purely because of miscommunication.
We talk about why "yes" doesn't always mean "yes, I understand", why asking a question feels like failure in some cultures, and what really works on the shop floor according to Joey: showing instead of explaining, and asking someone what they're going to do instead of whether they understand.

#5 - Time pressure
Imagine this: orders are piling up, the schedule is packed, and all around you people are saying: "Come on, we need to push through." What do you do? Do you go along with that pace, or do you stick to the rules that are actually there to protect you?
In this episode of Safety First, we speak with Demi. She talks about the moment a colleague got caught in a machine, about AGVs coming from blind spots, and about the small choices that make the difference between getting home safely. Time pressure can arise at any moment, but the consequences can be dangerous.

#4 - My finger was caught in the machine
Piotr (29) from Poland has been working in greenhouse construction in the Netherlands for four years. On a warm day, he took off his gloves to work faster. A glass panel slipped sideways, his finger got caught in the machine. Since then, he thinks differently about rules, about pace, and about that "it won't happen to me" mentality.

#3 - From grey workday to golden workday
Maaike (38) from Oosterhout started with one simple question: "Do you actually have safety gloves?" What followed was a series of small improvements that transformed the entire shop floor. In this episode, we talk about how as a temporary worker, a little courage can make all the difference.

#2 - You are in charge of your own safety
Mehmet (34) from Almere saw chaos on his first day: machines running with open covers, forklifts crossing in all directions, stress everywhere. He kept quiet, he was new. Until someone said to him: "You're allowed to speak up." In this episode, we talk about daring to intervene, even when your position feels uncertain.

#1 - We misunderstood each other...
Danny (36) from Schiedam has been working as a temporary worker in factories and recycling companies for sixteen years. One day he found himself standing in the steam, all because of one misunderstood word during a handover. It turned out fine, but it could easily have gone very differently. Danny talks about language barriers, social pressure, and why asking the right question can sometimes save lives.
