These Aren’t Our Ideas is a podcast that questions inherited beliefs, challenges religious certainty, and explores where our ideas actually come from. We dig into Christianity, science, the Bible, theology, philosophy, psychology, and history—pulling from biblical scholarship, ancient literature, Greek and Jewish worldviews, and modern thinkers.
This isn’t about tearing things down for the sake of it. It’s about intellectual honesty, curiosity, and following the evidence wherever it leads. Many of the ideas we carry feel personal, sacred, or unquestionable—but most of them were handed to us. In this podcast, we ask: Who gave us these ideas? Why do we believe them? And what happens when we really examine them?
If you’ve ever felt tension between faith and reason, tradition and truth, belief and doubt—this space is for you.
In this bonus conversation, Jake and Josh discuss doubt, grief, and the music and books that led them to question external authorities structures like religion. They explore what it means to stop looking outward for direction and instead find the center of themselves.
We talk about the band, Junip. Having just found them at a crucial point of life, their music has been an integral part of moving forward as adults, particularly for Jake and his brother who lost their father last year. Now in our early 40’s, what does it mean to move forward, to accept things as they are, to find and operate out of our “center."
Through honest conversation about loss, privilege, and choice, they discuss “peace" through the lens of self‑actualization—the freedom to decide for yourself, accept responsibility, and live from your own core.

Rap, Reunion & Rebirth: A Candid Chat on Faith and Peace
Jake and Josh begin with playful banter about a surprise rap, reminiscing about DC Talk, Michael W. Smith, and concert memories while sharing family moments.
The conversation deepens into a discussion about peace, rebirth, and the contrast between faith-based spiritual peace and the contentment earned through life experience and acceptance of impermanence.

Belief: How Does it Play Out? (Part 5)
Belief, particularly Christian belief, looks very different depending on where you are, when you are, and who you’re talking to and being influenced by. What are we supposed to “believe” in? The concept is so much more complicated than we pretend it is. People have and continue to believe all kinds of different things related to Jesus and Christianity. Christianity is fundamentally different in Egypt than it is in Ethiopia than it is in Russia. Eastern Orthodoxy looks fundamentally different than Bible Belt non-denominational Protestant-style expressions. Which one holds the “right belief?” How is anyone supposed to know? And, this was God’s plan all along?
As Christianity has played out in society, we have purview into why this “right belief” system makes no sense.
Do we even have a choice to believe, or is it something you’re “born with.” Some passages make it sound like that’s the case.
