Terzo romanzo della Trilogia di New York, pubblicata tra il 1985 e il 1987, La stanza chiusa segue Città di vetro e Fantasmi. Questo insieme di tre atti di una intricata detective-story è diventato un classico della letteratura americana contemporanea. In una città stravolta e allucinata, in cui ogni cosa si confonde e chiunque è sostituibile, i protagonisti di queste storie conducono ciascuno un’inchiesta misteriosa e dall’esito imprevedibile. Paul Auster inventa una sua New York fantastica, un «nessun luogo» in cui ciascuno può ritrovarsi e perdersi all’infinito. La stanza chiusa presenta un protagonista dai tratti confusi e sfuocati che un giorno, dal nulla, ritorna a contatto con un suo vecchio amico. Ma l'amico è scoparso e a contattarlo è la moglie che, titubante, gli mostra i manoscritti che Fanshawe aveva lasciato senza mai decidersi di pubblicare. Piano piano finirà per immedesimarsi a tal punto in una vita che non è la sua da sposarne la vedova e adottarne il figlio.
