All the news from my first-hand research as a true crime researcher. Special dossiers available on Sophie Toscan du Plantier, Penny Bell and Suzy Lamplugh with more cases arriving all the time. We're building a true crime community one person at a time.

Emma and I caught up again to talk more about the real Mary Carr that she uncovered and researched for her January 2026 nonfiction book for Pen & Sword (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorian-Londons-Notorious-Female-Leader/dp/1036142191). It is available right now!
This time we also talked about our writing processes, how much we enjoy research, and some of the pitfalls and struggles that all writers face in separating facts from rumour.
Emma and I also chatted about Mary Carr a few weeks ago and you can hear that extended discussion below or click here. You can buy Emma’s novel Mercy right now (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mercy-Emma-Woodhouse/dp/1803783095) and you can pre-order her nonfiction book on Mary Carr here (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Victorian-Londons-Notorious-Female-Leader/dp/1036142191). Emma’s earlier Mary Carr novel is here (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mary-Queen-Forty-True-Story-ebook/dp/B0DZLPMVB1).

Emma Woodhouse on Mary Carr and Mercy Newton
Emma and I talk about her novels on Mercy Newton and Mary Carr, and on her 2026 nonfiction book about Mary Carr. This is the first of two special discussions with Emma Woodhouse.

Suzy Lamplugh in 2026
Geraldine Comiskey and I talk about Suzy’s disappearance, some of the similarities and differences to my other main case, Sophie Toscan du Plantier.
We always try to put the focus on the victims on Crime Guy, but in this case, with no credible suspects at all, Suzy has always been the centre of her own story. I think of her as ‘officially missing’ but of course she was declared dead in a legal capacity on 27 July 1993. Having someone go missing puts the family in legal limbo and makes the situation even more maddening.
You can read more about Suzy and her legacy at the Suzy Lamplugh Trust (https://www.suzylamplugh.org/Pages/Category/suzy-lamplugh) website.

Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 2025
Sophie Toscan du Plantier was a French film producer and journalist who had a holiday cottage near Schull, West Cork, Ireland. Just before Christmas 1996 she made her final journey to the cottage. On 23rd December she would be murdered in the driveway just beside the house. We are no nearer to understanding what happened that night, or why, or who killed her in a violent struggle using makeshift weapons found at the scene.
You can read Geraldine’s book about this cold case here. (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blow-Baileys-fight-clear-name/dp/B0D3TVPRKJ)

The Boy in the Attic: Part 2
This is our second of two discussions about the 1973 murder that is documented thoroughly in a book by David Malone (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12905129-the-boy-in-the-attic). Although you might wish to read the book before you listen, and there are spoilers (I mean, this is true crime so there is a murder) I don’t think your curiosity will be reduced by listening to us talk. If you enjoy listening to me talking to Geraldine Comiskey then there is a full hour-long discussion elsewhere here on Crime Guy about the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork.

Geraldine Comiskey
Geraldine Comiskey is an expert on the Sophie Toscan du Plantier case. She wrote a book "The Blow-In" about how Ian Bailey could not have been the killer. As she reached the end of the book she started to suspect Sophie's neighbour, Alfie Lyons. Almost nobody else in the world thinks it was Alfie apart from Geraldine and Mrs Crime Guy. Have a listen!
This is a lo-fi video due to various technical issues but in the end Lola Kirke gave me the confidence to put it out there.

Emma Woodhouse on Mary Carr
I can almost now say that Mary Carr needs no introduction. This is largely due to Stephen Knight’s amazing Disney+ show called A Thousand Blows. Series 1 is out now and Series 2 is coming very soon indeed. But Emma Woodhouse has been studying the life of Mary in detail since 2021 and has a novelised account of her life out now. In 2026 she will publish a nonfiction book about Mary with Pen & Sword.
The main painting we think is Mary Carr is Frederic Leighton’s The Maid with the Golden Hair.
Emma’s novelised account of Mary is out now, and FREE on Kindle Unlimited (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mary-Queen-Forty-True-Story-ebook/dp/B0DZLPMVB1).

Nafisa Tosh talks Forty Elephants
Crime Guy sat down with Nafisa Tosh in her studio in east London. He was immediately exposed to a top secret outfit that he was not allowed to photograph, look at or comment upon. He has thought about little else since.
After recovering my senses, we got down to business and talked the back legs off a tired donkey. We’re going to be doing more of this in 2025, thank goodness. We talked mainly about A Thousand Blows and Dope Girls but also how this stuff is still going on today.
